The only notable marks are some tiny rim nicks and minor rim bruises, including a small rim bruise over the E in LIBERTY and another over the M in AMERICA (which are nearly invisible in the slab). MDS, Breen state II, showing a bisecting die crack slanting inside the wreath from the leaves left of the O in ONE down to the leaves under T in CENT. The date and legends are complete and strong. A premium mid-grade example of the Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars edge. Our grade is VF25. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35456. Estimate Value $12,500 - UP

1793 S-11b R4 Wreath Cent, Lettered Edge PCGS graded F15, CAC Approved. Variety with two leaves following DOLLAR. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with medium brown toning in protected areas of both sides. Only a few trivial marks on otherwise choice, smooth surfaces. The notable marks are some very tiny planchet chips in the field before the portrait (small planchet imperfections that didn’t completely strike out), another under the second 0 in the denominator, and a small rim nick at the first A in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state II. The date is strong and the legends are complete. The edge lettering is bold, including the double leaf feature following DOLLAR. Our grade is F12. Excellent eye appeal for the grade. The attribution and Holmes-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35474. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap PCGS graded G6. Mostly glossy dark olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth with a combination of microscopic roughness and tiny nicks under the glossy patina. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a dull rim nick over ME in AMERICA and a pair of nicks at the top of the I in UNITED. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. LDS, Breen state II, with a subtle bulge at CEN that causes the EN to be weak. Not perfect but quite acceptable for a lower-grade 1793 Liberty Cap cent. Our grade is net G5+, close to the PCGS grade of G6. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35489. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 PCGS graded VG8. Glossy medium to darker steel brown with underlying lighter brown toning in a few protected places. The surfaces are mostly smooth but there are some tiny planchet chips near the edge on the left side of the obverse and minor roughness from corrosion at TED ST and AME. No verdigris and the only notable mark is a single pit or planchet chip in the field before the eyebrow. LDS, Breen state II, with a minor bulge in the field under the cap. The date is clear and the legends are complete, although there is some weakness on a couple letters outside the wreath due to the minor roughness. Our grade is VG8, same as the PCGS grade. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2 graded VG; 2 finer for the variety. PCGS #35519. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded F12. Olive brown and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The surfaces are decent but faint microscopic roughness covers the fields and protected areas while the highpoints are nearly smooth. The only notable trace of verdigris is a speck of light green crud (perhaps easily removable) on the bottom of the D in UNITED. The notable marks are a light rim bruise left of the bottom of the cap and a diagonal nick on the left side of the O in ONE. MDS, Breen state II late or III early, with a faint bulge or "buckle" on the reverse from ON in ONE to the rim at RI in AMERICA. The vast majority of the tiny stars nestled among the dentils on the reverse are still visible. The only stars that are not visible are the ones over AMERIC, and much of that is due to the buckle that affects that side of the reverse. This is a relatively new discovery of the variety, and it appears it has never been brushed or "conserved" in any way. An important example of this highly coveted variety. Graded VG10 sharpness net VG7 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #59883. Our grade is net VG8. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer for the variety, 2 in VF, 1 in 50. PCGS #35705. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1794 S-64 R5- Missing Fraction Bar PCGS graded AU55. Rather glossy reddish brown with splashes of darker olive toning in some of the protected areas on both sides and lighter brown toning on the highpoints. Traces of microscopic roughness and verdigris can be found in some of the darker-toned areas, strongest in the hair under the cap and at TE in UNITED. The reverse fields are slightly reflective in the "unsplashed" areas. No contact marks, but there is a small planchet chip at the curl tip left of the date and a couple others at the bottoms of the 9 & 4, as struck. MDS, Breen state III early, with just a hint of swelling inside the wreath. The details are very sharp, and the missing fraction bar feature is bold. The H & D in HUNDRED are filled in with yellow ink indicating ownership by Homer K. Downing. Called AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes lists this piece as AU50 net VF35 and tied for CC#8. Our grade is AU50 net EF40. An important example of this popular "Redbook" variety, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Holmes-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 65 for the variety. PCGS #35708. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1794 S-65 R1 Head of 1794 PCGS graded VF35. Very attractive glossy medium olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers great eye appeal. No corrosion or verdigris, only minor contact marks, none distracting. The best identifying marks are a tiny diagonal nick on the cheek midway between the ear lobe and nostril and a short, dull scratch between the R & I in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state IX, with all the die cracks described by Breen. The date is bold and the legends are complete, although some elements on the reverse are weakened by the bisecting die crack and associated swelling that nearly obliterates the second A in AMERICA. Our grade is F15+, close to VF20. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35654. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1795 S-74 R4- Lettered Edge PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium chocolate and light olive brown with traces of lighter frosty brown toning in protected areas of the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a pair of tiny planchet chips (as struck) in the hair at the top of the head and a light, barely visible rim bruise over the L in LIBERTY plus another at the N in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II. There is no hint of bulging at the 7 in the date and the die cracks on the reverse are light. The date and legends are bold. Our grade is VF20+, close to VF25. The attribution and Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 7 finer for the variety. PCGS #35729. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF35. Mostly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear to be perfectly smooth and the eye appeal is excellent, but a strong glass reveals uniform extremely faint roughness. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks. The best identifying mark is a small rim nick at the T in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II early, with minor die crumbling on the tip of the nose and on the lips. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Called VF20 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#5, his photo #23180. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20.
