Lot 2897
Great Britain. Halfpenny, 1694. S.3452; KM-475.3. William and Mary. Obverse; Conjoined busts of William and Mary as joint monarchs. GVLIELMVS ET MARIA. Reverse; Britannia seated BRITAN NIA around and date in exergue below. The William and Mary currency Halfpenny is usually a badly made coin, but this specimen is mint state with well struck portraits. A hint of mint red and a glossy original sheen. A coin which is not difficult to obtain in low grades, but is practically impossible to find in this state of preservation. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. WINGS. Estimate Value $1,300 - 1,500
* In his book Peck notes that by 1692 public resentment at the continued use of tin coins was sufficient to bring their issue to an end. Mr Neale, then Master of the Mint, set out in a statement dated 9 June 1693 that he intended originally to produce 24 pence to the pound, although this seemed to fall to around 21 pence to the pound as production of halfpennies (and farthings) got underway in 1694. The dark, often black tone of the William and Mary pieces contrasts with the usually reddish-brown color of the copper coins of Charles II. On December 28 1694, almost exactly six months after the start of this coinage, the queen died (of smallpox) and a new obverse became necessary.

Lot 2898
Great Britain. Pattern Farthing in silver or official medalet, Undated. MI-695-92; Montagu 22. Edge plain. 23 mm. William III, 1694-1702. Tribute to William. Obverse, portrait of king facing right by John Roettier, legend GVLIELMVS III DEI GRATIA. Reverse, sun with rays NON DEVIO above. Mint state with a beautiful gold and ocean blue iridescent tone over proof surfaces. Surely the finest available example of this enigmatic piece. NGC graded MS-63. WINGS. Estimate Value $300 - 350
* Montagu originally described this piece as a 'pattern for a currency coinage' but later wondered if it was a medalet. Montagu pointed out that William III had only come to the throne by means of the flight of his predecessors and the consequent extinction of the Stuart line. He said 'Knowing the strong feeling among the lower classes, especially, in favour of what was considered to be the divinely legitimate race, it is quite probable that he (William III) thought it politic to distribute jettons of this kind as widely as possible, to give publicity to and ensure recognition of his and his queen's titles as reigning monarchs.'.

Great Britain. Pattern Half Penny, Undated. Peck-724 (Rare). Anne, 1702-1714. Obverse, draped bare-headed bust of Queen left, ANNA DG MAG BR FR ET HIB REG. Reverse; Britannia seated with shield, holding spear, exergue plain. A bronzed proof, exceptionally well detailed. Normally encountered in lower grades, this is a superior piece. Slight evidence of die rust on reverse as is normal. Struck on a 28mm diameter flan with plain lightly striated edge. Great eye appeal. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. WINGS. Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,200
*Peck comments that the portrait on these patterns is in low relief, resembling that on the silver coins. He maintains that it is probable that the 2 pattern halfpennies here offered were struck during the last year of Anne's reign or perhaps soon after her death in 1714. Peck describes the rust marks as being so slight and superficial 'that they detract very little from the fine overall appearance of the reverses.' There were no currency halfpenny coins produced for Queen Anne, and her sudden death in 1714 was probably the reason that these rare patterns remain the largest copper coins bearing her portrait.

George II ruled Britain from the end of May 1727 to October 1760. The son of George I and the grandfather of George III he died at Kensington Palace, London, on 25 October 1760 aged 76, and was buried at Westminster Abbey.
Silver coins were minted only spasmodically throughout the reign. Crowns are quite scarce. They were the largest silver coins and were only produced in ten years. All Crowns and Halfcrowns of this reign are rare in mint condition.
George declared war on Spain in 1739, and he was the last king to have personally led his troops, at the Battle of Dettingen on 17 June 1743.
