Lot 152
1835 N-19 R5 Head of 1836 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and olive with a faint streak of slightly lighter brown toning from star 2 to above star 11. Satiny mint frost covers the obverse of this cent, even the highest points of the devices (the obverse die was used previously with a different reverse to strike the N-7 variety). A new reverse die was introduced for this rare marriage and the fields are hard and slightly reflective on that side. The contrast between the worn out obverse die and new, prooflike reverse die is remarkable, and this cent offers great eye appeal. EDS, the only state for this brief die marriage, although this piece is especially early as evidenced by the prooflike reverse. CC#1, the only mint state example known of this rare variety. Called MS60 and CC#1 by 15 points in the Noyes census, his photo #22315. Bland says MS60 and CC#1 by 10 points. Our grade is MS62. This is a fantastic cent, a highlight of a collection that is noted for its superior quality. It is the discovery coin for the variety and it is plated in the Wright book on the cents of 1816-1839 to illustrate the variety. The attribution and Holmes-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest of the variety. PCGS #37072. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1836 N-1 R1+ PCGS graded MS64+ Red & Brown. Frosty mint red fading to light steel brown with about half the mellowing mint color remaining visible on both sides. The only marks are faint traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the portrait and a tiny swipe of darker brown toning under the E in AMERICA. This cent would rate a higher grade if the strike was sharper, but there is obvious weakness on the lowest curl at star 13 and on parts of the wreath. LDS with die cracks on both sides, including a bisecting crack from the first S in STATES to the R in AMERICA extending to the dentils over both letters. Graded MS63 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Our grade is MS60+, close to MS62. The attribution and Brown-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the finest RB of the variety at both services. PCGS #37112.
