Lot 101
1828 N-11 R2 Large Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous olive and light bluish steel with 5-10% of the faded mint red remaining visible, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable mark, and it is barely visible under magnification, is a vertical hairline from the hair over the right edge of the eye down to the chin where it fades away. EDS. The repunching left of the first S in STATES and left of the O in OF is strong and sharp. A great example of this interesting die variety. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#2 among the confirmed examples in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#2, his photo #35163. Our grade is MS62. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; tied for finest BN at both services. PCGS #36901. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1829 N-2 R2 Large Letters PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red fading to medium steel brown on the highpoints with nearly a third of the bright original mint color remaining visible on both sides. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake on star 6 (as struck), faint traces of old fingerprints in the obverse fields, and a small splash of darker toning below RI in AMERICA. Sharply struck M-LDS with two die cracks on the obverse. A very attractive cent in spite of the minor marks, and 1829 cents are seldom found with this much original mint color. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #35103. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1829 N-4 R4 Large Letters PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Attractive lustrous light bluish steel brown and chocolate with slightly faded mint red showing in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are frosty and quite attractive with only a few trivial marks. A couple tiny specks of dark toning tucked against the right edge of the hair bun and a small spot hidden between the upper left points of star 5 are the only notable marks, and they are not at all distracting. Choice except for the usual flat strike on many of the stars, on the hair at the top of the head, on the curl over the 9 in the date, and on many of the leaves in the wreath. LDS. The die crack through R in AMERICA is strong and the small rim cuds at stars 3-5 are clear. Called MS62 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census (where only 3 examples are graded better than EF40), his photo #21126. Bland says MS60 and CC#1 among the confirmed examples. Our grade is MS60+. 1829 N-7 R3 Large Letters PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the cheek and 10-15% of the original mint red remaining visible. The only marks are a few small spots of slightly darker toning, including one in the field before the forehead and another under the second S in STATES. These small spots are not at all distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. A bit softly struck, as usual, with minor weakness on the upper part of the hair buns, on the curl over the 9, and on most of the stars as well as parts of the wreath. MDS with 4 "Wheelspoke" die cracks on the reverse, all extending from the dentils to the wreath. These are located at the R in AMERICA, the ribbon at the bottom of the wreath, just left of the first S in STATES, and through the first A in AMERICA. A beautiful example of this tough die variety. Called MS63 and CC#1 as the only mint state example known in the Noyes census, his photo #35901. Bland says MS60+ and CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Beautiful, highly lustrous light steel brown and chocolate with underlying very faded mint color peeking through in the fields and protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and essentially flawless offering outstanding eye appeal. A subtle, faint swipe of slightly darker golden olive toning on the lower point of star 4 can help identify this cent, but it is difficult to see. M-LDS. 1831 N-14 R4 Large Letters PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red on the obverse. The only marks are a shallow, faint planchet chip on the jaw, as struck, and a very faint horizontal hairline high above the N in ONE. Nicely struck MDS with full radial lines in all the stars. The always-present rim cud from star 8.5 to star 9.5 is clearly visible. Called MS60+ and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 and tied for CC#1 honors, his photo #27102. Our grade is MS60. In our opinion and that of Del Bland, this is the only mint state example of the variety known. Previously removed from a PCGS slab graded MS64BN (PCGS label #36991.64/13093276). 1833 N-2 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. The obverse is lustrous light brown and chocolate with underlying very faded red showing through in the fields and protected areas. The reverse is nearly full original bright mint red. Almost flawless in every respect. The only defects are some very light contact marks in the field before the face and a few marks on the edge suggesting this cent was displayed on a board resting against pins or tacks placed around the edge (the contrast in toning supports this idea). LDS. The dies are worn and the repunching found on parts of ONE CENT in the earlier states is gone. Die bounce has created a clear double profile from the forehead down to the chin with additional doubling on LIBERTY, the eye, and on several letters of ONE CENT (not to be confused with repunching). Struck with the reverse rotated 45 degrees clockwise. A very impressive cent. Graded MS63 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Our grade is MS63+. 1835 N-8 R1 Head of 1836 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous bluish steel and olive with at least 20% of the mellowed mint color remaining. A beautiful cent with only microscopic marks, none visible without the aid of a strong glass. A small splash of slightly darker toning at the leaves off the top of the T in CENT is the best identifying mark. E-MDS with a die crack reaching from the dentils up through the 1 in the date and the portrait into the hair behind the ear and weakly to the right top of the T in LIBERTY where it fades away. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #28373. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#6. Our grade is MS63+. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Newcomb reference on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plates VII & VIII). A very attractive cent that comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Newcomb-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 2 finer in 65 for the variety. PCGS #37061. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1835 N-11 R4+ Small Date PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright original mint red mellowing to light bluish steel brown with at least 75% of the original mint color remaining. There are numerous microscopic specks of darker steel toning scattered over both sides but no carbon or contact marks. A larger spot under the T in UNITED and another over that E plus a small planchet flake on the right upright of the M in AMERICA can help identify this cent. EDS with smooth, slightly reflective fields. The always-present die cracks at the bottom of the reverse are light. This remarkable cent has been called a proof strike at times; we agree with the early business strike assessment. But by any standards this is a fantastic example of a rare die variety, the finest known. And it happens to be Mr. Ahumada's favorite cent in this fabulous collection. A great opportunity for the collector who demands the best. Our grade is MS65. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; tied for finest RB of the variety at both services. PCGS #37094. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1835 N-13 R4 Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Glossy light to medium steel brown and chocolate with 20% of both sides showing mellowed mint red. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable marks are a few light nicks on the cheek and a small patch of lighter golden tan toning in that same area right of the mouth. Otherwise this cent is choice. MDS with impressed dentils in the field over ONE and a tiny die chip off the right bottom of the 5 but before any rim cud breaks on the reverse. That 5 shows obvious repunching along its base. Struck with a clear double profile from the coronet down to the chin plus similar doubling on stars 3-12 (all from die bounce). Graded MS61 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#2 behind the AU55 Frankenfield example we sold in an M&G/Superior 2/17/2001 sale, lot 1099 (Noyes photo #32702). Your cataloger has written auction lot descriptions for the top 5 examples of this variety, and I consider this piece to be the finest of that distinguished group. Our grade is MS60+. Another great cent in a superior collection. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only RB example graded at both services. PCGS #37100. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP

1835 N-14 R2 Head of 1836 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown. Very attractive lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel brown and olive. About 20% of the obverse and 40% of the reverse show mint color. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic contact marks. A pair of very tiny ticks on the tip of the nose and a small nick on the chin are the best identifying marks, but they are insignificant. Nicely struck E-MDS. The always-present die crack at AME is light, the bulge at the dentil tips near stars 9-11 is gone, and a clear die clashmark shows under the N in ONE. A nice, problem-free example of the 1835 Head of 1836 type. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest RB example of the variety. PCGS #37064. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

1835 N-15 R2 Head of 1836 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous bluish steel brown with slightly faded mint red covering about 10% of the planchet, mostly on the obverse. The only marks are a small splash of darker toning at the dentils over star 9, a fine horizontal hairline in the field before the nose, and a faint hairline scratch at the left end of the line under CENT. The surfaces are satiny and offer excellent eye appeal. MDS. The fields are flowlined on both sides and the small chip die defect under the right side of the 3 is faint but still visible. There is a clear double profile on the forehead, upper lip, and chin, plus minor doubling on a couple of the stars (all from die bounce). Softly struck on the brow lock and along the front edge of the nose. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#1, his photo #28777. Our grade is MS63. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest RB of the variety at both services. PCGS #37066.
