Lot 51
1820 N-13 R1 Large Date PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous light olive and bluish steel with 10-15% of both sides showing mint red. A sharply struck beauty with just a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a couple small nicks under the eye and a tiny splash of darker toning between the U & N in UNITED. Sharply struck MDS with a die crack through the date and stars, the usual Randall Hoard die state for this variety. A great date or type coin. Our grade is MS63+. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; tied for finest BN of the variety. PCGS #36673. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

1820 N-15 R2 Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Frosty mint red mellowing to steel brown with about 80% of the obverse retaining mint red and 60% of the reverse showing mint color. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake on the edge under star 12 that caused some weakness on a dentil, a small splash of darker toning on the right side of the F in OF, and a thin radial nick through the right foot of the M in AMERICA. LDS with fine die rust on the reverse (tiny lumps on the coin) and crumbling in the upper notches of both N's in ONE CENT. Most likely from the Randall Hoard, but this is a particularly nice one. Our grade is MS64. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; tied for finest RB of the variety. PCGS #36704. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1821 N-1 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red. Frosty bright original mint red faded to darker steel brown on the highest points of the devices. At least 85-90% of the original mint color remains visible on both sides. As remarkable as this cent happens to be, it does have some spots that detract from the eye appeal. The largest spot is at the bust tip and there is another with raised verdigris over the left side of the C in CENT. The remaining spots, perhaps a half dozen of them, are not as significant or distracting. M-LDS with a fine die crack that nearly bisects the reverse, reaching from the dentils left of the O in OF down through the wreath to the ribbon loop, but the extension from the ribbon to the dentils below is not present. This cent was discovered in 1981 in the cornerstone of a Boston building constructed in 1821. A total of 7 mint state 1821 cents were recovered (2 of the N-1 variety and 5 of the N-2 variety). Graded MS65 by Del Bland and tied for finest known honors in his census with the other N-1 found in the cornerstone. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#4, his photo #35732. Our grade is MS63. A remarkable opportunity for someone who wants a superior example of the date or die variety. The attribution and Fitzgerald-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only MS RD example graded at both services. PCGS #36708. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1821 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown and olive with about 80% of the obverse covered with fading mint color and at least a third of the reverse showing mint red. The only notable marks are a pair of small nicks right of the nostril and a smaller one on the upper lip. A good identifying mark would be a tiny planchet flake inside the C in AMERICA. Sharply struck EDS. The diagonal die line from the bust tip is clear and there is no trace of crumbling in the dentils on the obverse. Fine multiple profiles show on most of the stars and on the upper edge of the coronet tip (a result of die bounce). A superior example of the date. Graded MS62 and CC#4 in the Bland census. Our grade is MS63+. A great cent that comes with a provenance that has been traced back more than a century. The attribution and Beckwith-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1822 N-2 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous light steel brown and olive with delicate overtones of light bluish steel, especially on the obverse. Mint red covers 5-10% of the planchet, mostly on the reverse. There is a small spot of darker olive toning in the hair under the B in LIBERTY and some very light contact marks scattered about the obverse. A nick on star 6, a hairline scratch from that star to the hair over the coronet, and a light scratch along the dentil tips over star 8 are good identifying marks. MDS. The die crack through stars 8-11 is clear and the long dash between the bases of second S in STATES and the adjacent O is obvious. The fields are satiny from microscopic radial die flowlines. A sharp, frosty cent that offers excellent eye appeal. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 honors in the Bland and Noyes census lists, Noyes photo #33218. Our grade is MS60+, close to MS62. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Holmes-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 1 finer in 64+ for the variety. PCGS #36715. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1822 N-7 R3+ PCGS graded AU58. Glossy medium chocolate brown and olive steel with lighter brown toning inside the wreath. The sharpness of this cent is very close to mint state but it was cleaned long ago and it has retoned naturally over the decades. There are spots of shallow crud in protected areas around the date and lower stars, but it takes a glass to see them. The best identifying marks are a spot of darker reddish brown toning on the right side of the O in ONE and a thin diagonal planchet void over the C in CENT (as struck). Sharply struck EDS. 1825 N-10 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive frosty steel brown and olive with 20% of the original mint red remaining visible on both sides. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. Nearly flawless. A small spot of darker toning in the field over the outer part of the hair bun and a tiny diagonal nick on the left side of the O in ONE are the best identifying marks, but they are trivial. Rare LDS with a cud break that engulfs the outer point of star 7. Graded MS63 Choice and finest known of the die variety in the Noyes census (no photo). Our grade is MS63. 1828 N-3 R2 Large Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. Nearly flawless except for some weakness in the dentils from star 13 to the date and in the opposing dentils at OF A, all thanks to a slightly thin planchet in that area. Otherwise the strike is quite sharp. EDS. The fine die crack from star 8 to the hair bun has not formed. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #22206. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is MS60+. An attractive cent that comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Helfenstein-Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 64+ for the variety. PCGS #36880. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1828 N-6 R1 Large Date PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Attractive lustrous medium steel brown with light bluish steel overtones and traces of mellowed mint red remaining on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The only notable marks are a couple tiny ticks in the field right of star 4, but these are easily lost in the tiny lumps that are sprinkled over the obverse (all caused by die rust). Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal is excellent. LDS. All the fine obverse die cracks described by John Wright for this variety are present but the repunching on the left side of the O in OF remains clear. Not seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is MS62+. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; tied for finest BN of the variety at both services. PCGS #36889. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

Lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with 15% of the obverse showing mint color but only traces of faded mint red remaining visible on the reverse. 1828 N-8 R3 Large Date PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Glossy medium brown and tan mixed with darker olive brown and steel on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. Looks mint state but there is a touch of rub on the highest points and a few trivial marks, including a spot of darker toning at the right top of the E in ONE. Sharply struck EDS, before the die crack through UNITED. Struck with a double profile on parts of stars 5-8 and a very fine triple profile on the brow (from die bounce). Noyes graded AU50 and CC#2, his photo #28441. Our grade is AU55. A nice example of a variety that is surprisingly difficult to find in top grades. The attribution and Ahumada provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest BN of the variety at both services. PCGS #36895. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
