Lot 226
1808 S-277 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Highly lustrous light bluish steel brown and chocolate with hints of underlying faded mint red showing through in protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the entire planchet, even the highest points of the devices, and this cent offers exceptional eye appeal. No spot or stains, nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a microscopic pinprick on the bottom of the first 8 in the date and a tiny scratch on the left top of the first T in STATES. LDS, Breen state VIII. There is a small internal cud break inside the D in UNITED and a narrow rim cud break over that N. The die failure at D STATES is well advanced and star #1 is now faint (the so-called 12-Star die state). A beautiful Classic Head cent. Graded MS63 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20278. Bland says MS65 and CC#1. Our grade is MS64. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 66 at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

Lot 227
1809 S-280 R2 Large 9 over Small 9 PCGS graded MS62 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel. A very attractive cent that looks flawless to the unaided eye. The only marks are a spot of very fine carbon on the cheek right of the nostril, another on the jaw, and a third barely visible one on the neck. In addition there are some extremely faint brushing lines on the cheek, but you have to get the light at just the right angle to see them. Otherwise this cent is choice. LDS, Breen state VIII, with a small chip out of the die that left a lump on the leaf under ES in STATES. The Large 9 over Small 9 feature is weak. This cent has not been seen by Noyes or Bland. Our grade is MS60, and to the best of our knowledge it is the finest known of the late die state. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 2; 3 finer at PCGS for the variety, 1 in 63, 2 in 64. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

Lot 228
1810 S-282 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown with faint specks of darker steel brown toning scattered over the obverse. No roughness or verdigris, only a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a few nicks around star 2 and a tiny planchet chip nestled between the lower left points of star 3. E-MDS, Breen state II, with faint die cracks connecting stars 2-4 and 10-11. Very shallow low spots cover much of the neck with similar low spots around the E in ONE and T in CENT (all caused by debris or lubricating grease on the dies). Graded MS63 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#3, his photo #35858. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. The reverse of this cent is plated in Penny Whimsy. A very nice cent that comes with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 64 at PCGS for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1811 S-287 R2 PCGS graded AU58+. Beautiful glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with a few faint peeps of very faded mint red in protected areas. Frosty mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Virtually flawless. 1814 S-295 R1 Plain 4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty olive brown with hints of bluish steel overtone and traces of underlying very faded red in protected areas on the reverse. The only mark on otherwise flawless surfaces is a small, inconspicuous spot of shallow reddish carbon under the left foot of the N in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state III. There are strong die clashmarks that have created what is sometimes called a double profile from the brow to the tip of the nose. A fine die crack reaches from the bust tip to the dentils under star 1, but the crack from star 11 to the lowest curl has not formed. Fine raised polishing lines from a fresh die lapping show in the field before the portrait. A sharp, beautiful cent. Perfect for a high-grade type set. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20056. Our grade is MS60 as well. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label.
