Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 17
1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1795 PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive frosty medium brown and chocolate with lighter brown and tan in protected areas. Traces of mint luster remain visible in protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No spots, stains, or roughness. The only defects are microscopic planchet flakes and chips scattered over both sides (as struck) and some trivial contact marks. The best identifying marks are a tiny planchet chip at the rim left of the lowest curl and a thin nick across the wreath stem and leaf under the second A in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state II, with a thick crack or die flaw from the rim to the right top of the Y in LIBERTY. A great example of this tough die variety. Our grade is AU50. Noyes says AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#3, his photo #33232. Noyes says the finest example resides in the ANS Collection, so there is only one better piece available to collectors according to his census. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 63 for the variety. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1796 S-103 R4+ Draped Bust, LIHERTY Error PCGS graded AU55. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown in protected areas and slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth, void of any corrosion or verdigris, and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The only defects are some minor contact marks, including two faint hairline scratches from the hair below the ear lobe down to the bottom of the neck near the drapery, a dull nick on the rim over the T in LIBERTY, and a minor rim bruise over the C in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state II, with several fine die cracks on the reverse. The date and legends are strong and the LIHERTY error is bold. Our grade is net EF40. Bland says EF40 as well and CC#5 in his census. Noyes says AU50 sharpness net VF35 (for a possible very old retoning, which may be true), and tied for CC#5, his photo #34609. Both sides of this cent are plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Clearly one of the finest LIHERTY Obverse 1796 cents available to collectors, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the finest graded at both services. Estimate Value $22,000 - UP

1796 S-119 R3 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highest points of the devices. No spots, stains, or contact marks. The only defects are some of the usual microscopic chips that were on these planchets prior to striking. A very tiny chip under the corner of the eye and another nestled between the leaf tips under the second S in STATES are good identifying marks, but you will need a strong glass to see them. M-LDS, Breen state III early, with a strong die crack through the 17 and lowest curl and narrow rim cud breaks over TAT in STATES. There is a minor planchet clip affecting the dentils opposite the chin and the opposing ones over ME in AMERICA (as struck). This beautiful cent is almost certainly from the famous "Nichols Hoard" of mint state cents. (The "Nichols Hoard" is the name commonly applied to a group of cents, certainly several hundred and possibly as many as 1000, that were obtained directly from the US Mint in 1797 by Benjamin Goodhue, a member of the Continental Congress. These cents were passed down through his family until they ended up as the property of the Nichols family before being dispersed in the 1860's by David Nichols of Gallows Hill, Massachusetts. The hoard contained examples of the S-119 variety of 1796 and the S-123 and S-135 varieties of 1797.) Our grade is MS60. A great type or date coin. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 3 finer, 2 in 64, 1 in 65 for the variety. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1797 S-120a R3 Reverse of 1795, Plain Edge PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Variety with single leaves at the top of the wreath. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with a couple tiny wisps of darker olive brown on the lower part of the reverse. There is a very light touch of wear on the highpoints of the obverse but the reverse appears very close to mint state. The only marks are a faint swipe of darker toning in the field left of the hair ribbon and a collection of microscopic pinpricks in the field above the bust tip. The dentils left of the date are softly struck, as are the opposing ones over the second T in STATES (all thanks to minor thinness in the planchet at that spot). MDS, Breen state III, with a fine crack through the top of LIBERTY and minor crumbling on the profile of Ms Liberty. Called AU50 by Denis Loring and tied for CC#2. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#5. Our grade is EF45. A very attractive and important example of this popular "Redbook" type. The attribution and Koshkarian provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest of the variety graded at both services. Estimate Value $18,000 - UP

1797 S-131 R2 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded AU53, CAC Approved. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. No spots, stains or corrosion, just a few small contact marks and planchet defects. The only marks visible without the aid of a glass are a small planchet chip in the field over the hair ribbon and a chip out of the rim just right of the second S in STATES, both defects as struck. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a dull vertical die crack in the field before the portrait and a tiny spike hanging down from the tip of the nose. In addition there is a second lighter vertical crack near the dentils right of the first crack. Breen says the second vertical crack (his state IV) begins after the state III crack from the lower curls, but his sequence is reversed. The crack from the lower curls is not present. A superior example of the "Stemless Wreath" version of 1797. Our grade is VF35+, close to EF40. Noyes says EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#4 honors, his photo #26889. Underlying mint luster covers the planchet and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The only defects, and they are mint made, are a shallow low spot at the ear lobe and another over the N in ONE, both the result of grease on the die. Otherwise everything is sharply struck. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a subtle bulge at D-ST. Most likely a survivor from the famous Nichols Hoard of mint state cents (see the story of the Nichols Hoard in the description of the 1796 S-119 offered earlier). Our grade is MS62. 1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded VF30. Mostly glossy chocolate and olive brown. The planchet appears perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas on the obverse while the reverse is perfectly smooth. No spots or verdigris, only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a thin vertical nick on the forehead, a collection of faint scratches hidden in the field before the chin, and a diagonal nick over the left top of the T in CENT. Both the date and LIBERTY are strong, which is a big plus since many of this variety were struck with one or the other quite weak due to axially misaligned dies. MDS, Breen state II late or III early. The irregular lump over the T in CENT is strong but there is no evidence of crumbling in the dentils on the reverse. A sharp, attractive example of this date. 1802 S-228 R2 Error Fraction 1/000 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous medium steel brown and chocolate with faint hints of very faded mint color peeking through in a few of the protected areas. Mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and it offers outstanding eye appeal. Nearly flawless. A trio of microscopic ticks in a line under the L in LIBERTY and a tiny planchet flake on the tip of the leaf under C in AMERICA are the best identifying marks, but they are barely visible with a glass. E-MDS, Breen state II late. Die roughness (Breen calls it "scaling") covers most of the obverse fields and the bust with similar scaling at STA in STATES. A radial die crack reaches from the rim to the D in UNITED but it does not extend through the wreath, and clear die clashmarks show on both sides. This cent is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia on early date large cents. Our grade is MS63, same as the PCGS grade. Appears that PCGS may have shot a bit low on this one.
