Lot 633
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-1 R3 PCGS graded VF30. An "IN at Left" of tree type. Frosty light to medium silver fading to darker grayish steel in protected areas. Nicely centered on a nearly round planchet. The Oak Tree, date, and denomination are all strong. There is a minor wave or bend in the planchet that caused uneven wear on a few letters of the legend, but most of the letters are complete. This piece may have been struck more than once. A major portion of an "N" is clearly visible above the second N in ENGLAND and weaker elements of another letter are visible over the adjacent D. A nice piece worth a close look. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight listed as 72.07 grains on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 634
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-9 R5 PCGS graded XF45. An "IN at Bottom" of tree type. Attractive glossy medium grayish steel, slightly lighter on the devices than in the protected areas. The obverse (tree side) is slightly misaligned to the bottom but the reverse is nicely centered on the nearly round planchet. All the design elements are well struck and this piece would be choice except for a mint-made fissure that affects the H in MASATHVSETS and the opposing first N in ENGLAND. Still a very nice example of this tough Large Planchet variety. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight listed as 70.52 grains on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-9 R5 NGC graded VF30. An "IN at Bottom" of tree type. Glossy medium grayish steel fading to a slightly darker shade of gray in protected areas. This piece is quite nice for the grade, void of any notable defects. The obverse is nicely centered but the reverse is slightly off center to the top leaving parts of a few letters off the nearly round planchet. The Oak Tree is complete and clearly visible but not strong, and everything else is clear. A nice, problem-free example of this historic early American coinage. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight listed as 64.6 grains on the NGC label. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-14 R4 PCGS graded XF45. An "IN at Bottom" of tree type. Glossy light to medium silvery gray on the devices and darker gun-metal gray in protected areas. No planchet flaws or roughness, but there are a few contact marks. The notable ones are a few shallow digs between the E & W in NEW and a few more at the bottom of AN in AN DOM. The Oak Tree and date are complete and bold, and the legends are strong. Nicely centered leaving only the tops of a couple letters tight to the edge of the nearly round planchet. Another very nice Oak Tree Shilling. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight of 71.30 grains shown on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP

1662 Massachusetts Oak Tree Twopence with Small 2 Noe-31 R6+ PCGS graded VF35. Frosty medium grayish steel with lighter silvery gray on the devices. The toning contrast accents the designs and adds the eye appeal. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are three microscopic pinpricks at the bottom of the second S in MASATHVSETS. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned to the bottom (as usual for this variety) while the reverse is nearly centered on the planchet. The tiny Oak Tree, date, and denomination are all complete and clear, and the legends that made it onto the planchet are strong. A nice example of this very rare variety. Listed on page 40 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 638
1662 Massachusetts Oak Tree Twopence with Large 2 Noe-32 R6+ NGC graded MS63. Very attractive frosty gunmetal gray and bluish steel with lighter steely gray toning on the highpoints. Microscopic granularity covers the fields and protected areas while the devices are all smooth (apparently as struck). The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a tick on the lower half of the 1 in the date and another elongated pinprick just right of the denomination. A dull wave in the planchet shows near the bottom of the Oak Tree and at the bottom of the denomination. Boldly struck with outstanding details throughout. The obverse is slightly off center to the bottom (as usual) while the reverse is centered on the planchet. A superior example of the type. Listed on page 40 in the "Redbook." Weight listed as 10.6 grains on the NGC label. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 639
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Large Planchet Noe-8 R4 NGC graded AU55. A Large Planchet type with a monogrammed "NE" in NEW. Frosty light to medium steel gray and silver. Looks flawless to the unaided eye but there are a few very faint hairline scratches hidden in the toning on both sides. The fields and protected areas display the usual microscopic granularity while the highpoints are smooth, which is typical for the variety (polishing the dies was not a priority at the time). Nicely struck with strong details throughout. The obverse is very slightly misaligned to the top and the reverse off by a similar amount to the bottom leaving parts of a few letters off the planchet. MDS with at cud break at GL in ENGLAND and an obvious lump under the hollow tree trunk. A great example of the "Monogrammed" or "Ligatured NE" type of Pine Tree Shilling. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight shown as 68.2 grains on the NGC label. Pop 3; 10 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $7,500 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Large Planchet Noe-8 R4 PCGS graded XF45. A Large Planchet type with a monogrammed "NE" in NEW. Glossy gunmetal gray with lighter silvery gray toning on the devices. Smooth and essentially flawless except for a mint-made planchet fissure at the V in MASATHVSETS and the opposing GL in ENGLAND plus another smaller fissure at the rim over the N in IN. The Pine Tree, date, and denomination are all strong and the legends are mostly clear although parts are slightly off the planchet. The monogrammed or ligatured NE in NEW is bold. The obverse is misaligned slightly to the top while the reverse is centered on the planchet. LDS with a larger cud break at GL in ENGLAND that extends slightly inside the beads below those letters. Listed on page 41 of the "Redbook." Weight shown as 70.68 grains on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

Lot 641
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Small Planchet Noe-25 R5 PCGS graded VF25. A Small Planchet type. Glossy dark gunmetal gray with lighter silvery steel toning on the highpoints. Smooth and quite nice except for a slightly thin vertical streak down the center of the planchet (the planchet was a bit thinner along that line). As a result the devices are softly struck along the streak but properly impressed everywhere else. The middle two digits of the date and parts of the Pine Tree are affected. Otherwise this piece is free of defects and offers excellent eye appeal. Struck slightly off center to K-9 leaving the tops of a couple letters tight to the edge of the planchet. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Small Planchet Noe-30 R3 NGC graded XF40. A Small Planchet type with MASSACHUSETTS. Glossy medium gray and steel with lighter silvery steel toning on the devices. The surfaces are smooth and the only mark is a dull dent affecting a couple beads right of the Pine Tree. Unevenly struck with everything strong except for obvious weakness at ETS right of the Pine Tree and the opposing EW ENG on the reverse. The Pine Tree, date, and denomination are all quite bold. Much of the legend outside the beads is off the planchet, which is normal for the Small Planchet varieties. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight shown as 71.4 grains on the NGC label. 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 R5 NGC graded MS63. Type with pellets on either side of the tree trunk. Attractive frosty bluish steel gray and toned silver with hints of mint luster showing in the fields on both sides. No contact marks but there is a minor stain of slightly darker toning near the rim over the Pine Tree. Boldly struck everywhere except for the area left of the tree and the opposing area right of the date, apparently due to the planchet being a bit thinner in that area. The obverse is misaligned to K-12, as always on this variety, but the reverse is nicely centered on the planchet. A great example of this tough denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight shown as 35.2 grains on the NGC label. Pop 2; 3 finer in 64. Estimate Value $8,500 - UP

The tiny pellets on either side of the trunk are clearly visible. A very nice example of this tough denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

Glossy bright silver on the devices thanks to a light cleaning and darker grayish steel in the fields and protected areas. Strongly struck with bold details throughout and just a touch of wear on the highpoints. The obverse is misaligned only slightly to the top, much better than most of this variety, and the reverse is almost perfectly centered on the planchet. The tiny pellets on either side of the tree trunk are clear. A premium example of the denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
