Lot 2349
Great Britain. Five Pounds, 1902. S.3965; Fr-398; KM-807. Edward VII. Obverse, bare headed portrait of king left by De Saulles. Teverse, Pistrucci's St George and dragon. A one year type coin minted in relatively small number in the coronation year. A glossy and attractive mint state example of the currency issue, intended for circulation. NGC graded MS-62. Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,300
*The currency gold of Edward VII is much rarer in high grade than its matte proof siblings which were more sharply struck and safely housed in the boxed Specimen/Proof sets. Nearly all 1902 currency gold coins are found in low grade, and were often mounted for use in jewelery. This uncirculated piece is free from the scuffs, wear and poor minting quality usually associated with Edwardian non-Proof gold.
