Macedonian Kingdom. Demetrios I Poliorketes. Silver Tetradrachm (17.36 g), 306-283 BC. Amphipolis, ca. 289/8 BC. Diademed and horned head right. Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔHMHTPIOY, Poseidon Pelagaios, nude, standing left, right foot propped on rock, holding trident in left hand, right arm resting on leg; monograms to outer left and right. The Hanbery Collection.
The diademed portrait of Demetrios Poliorketes, which is included among the earliest numismatic depictions of a living Hellenistic king, elevates him to the status of a god through the addition of horns. These not only respond to the horn of Ammon on Lysimachos' celebrated coin portrait of the deified Alexander the Great, but refer to Demetrios' association with Poseidon (in his aspect as Taureos), whose sacred animal was the bull. Indeed, the Athenians hailed him as a son of the sea-god when he entered their city in 291/0 BC. Should there be any doubt about his connection to Poseidon, a depiction of the god - probably representing a lost statue - appears on the reverse.

From the Herbert & Aphrodite Rubin Collection; Private purchase from Edward J. Waddell in 1980s.
A wonderful portrait of the last king of the Antigonid dynasty of Macedon in a high Hellenistic style graces the obverse of this tetradrachm. Political missteps and the enmity of Rome forced this tragic king to embark upon the disastrous Third Macedonian War (171-168 BC), which cost him his diadem and resulted in the division of his kingdom into Roman protectorates.

Thraco-Macedonian Region, Siris. Silver Stater (9.80 g), ca. 525-480 BC. Ithyphallic satyr standing right, clutching wrist of nymph fleeing right; around, three pellets. Reverse: Rough incuse square divided diagonally. Smith grp. 5 (Lete); SNG ANS 954-61 ('Lete'); HPM pl. VIII, 4. Rare. Well struck on excellent metal. Lightly toned. Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,500
The Hanbery Collection; Purchased privately from CNG in 1991.
This stater features a scene involving a satyr and a nymph, the descendants of Silenos, the rustic and permanently drunk tutor of Dionysos. While the nymphs were female spirits of rivers and the woods, the satyrs were male goat-like woodland spirits with only one thing on their minds. Here, the satyr seems to be propositioning a reluctant nymph - a not uncommon motif in Greek art, especially vase painting - although some commentators (perhaps of a more Victorian bent) have described the scene as a satyr and nymph dancing. Both the weight of the coin and the subject matter of the obverse type shows the influence of Thasian coinage on the coinages of the Thraco-Macedonian mainland.

Boldly struck and well centered with a uniform antique light greyish tone. Some faint scratches on the cheek. Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
The Hanbery Collection; Purchased privately from F. Kovacs in 1991. Ex Sotheby's (19 June 1991), 171, Nelson Bunker Hunt Collection, pt. IV (19-20 June 1991), 171; Ex NFA VIII (6 June 1980), 68; Ex Boston Museum of Fine Arts Collection (acc. no. 00.182 = purchased in 1900 with funds from the Catherine Page Perkins Fund).
The obverse of this coin depicts Hermes, who was worshiped at Ainos in his peculiar local aspect as Perpheraios ("the Wanderer"). The Hellenistic poet, Kallimachos, tells the story of how Epeios, the creator of the Trojan Horse, constructed a wooden cult statue (xoanon in Greek) of Hermes that was washed out to sea. It remained adrift in the Aegean Sea until it was caught in the nets of fishermen near the mouth of the Hebros River in Thrace. Mistaking the statue for mere driftwood, the fishermen tried to use it for firewood, but it would not burn under any circumstances. Fearful of the miraculous wood, the fisherman threw the statue back into the sea only to have it promptly returned to shore by the waves. The native Thracians of the area recognized the statue as a divine relic and subsequently built a shrine to house it on the site that later became the Aiolian Greek colony of Ainos. The Archaic wooden image of Hermes was still worshipped in his temple at Ainos and was sometimes depicted on coins of the Hellenistic period, but here the god is shown in the idealized anthropomorphic form more familiar to the wider Greek world. Lest there be any doubt about the god depicted, Hermes' sacred animal, the goat, also appears on the reverse.

This coin features an iconic early Hellenistic portrait of Alexander the Great that transcended all borders and the limits of mere geography. Although the precise location of Damastion remains a mystery today, at least its regional boundaries were known to the Greek geographer Strabo who mentions it in his famous Geography, written during the principate of Augustus. He says that there was an alliance of two Illyro-Paeonian tribes, the Dyestae and Enchelii, who had established themselves around the silver mines of Damastion (VII, 7. 326). It was these tribes, then, who were responsible for this coinage, and the only two magistrate's mentioned on the coins of Damastion before it was subsumed by the growing economic dominance of the Macedonian Kingdom of Philip II and Alexander III were Herakleidas and, as here, Kephisophon. They did so only at the very end of the period before the mint ceased to exist.
