Carbonado - A Black Diamond From Space. Carbonados, dark and uncrystalized diamonds were created by an exploding large star (supernova) before the formation of our solar system and delivered to Earth by an asteroid over two billion years ago. These rare diamonds are only found on the east coast of Brazil and the west coast of the Central African Republic. Because of the lack of crystal structure there are no shear planes in which to facet these fascinating black diamonds. (the color can vary from black to dark grey and dark green depending on their trace elements). The proof of an extraterrestrial origin is the presence of nitrogen and hydrogen in their matrix indicating an origin in a hydrogen-rich interstellar space region and are never found in any diamond mines anywhere in the world which is consistent with their origin from a single asteroid impact over two billion years ago. Most Carbonado black diamonds recovered have been small weighing 3 carats or less. This large 22 x 15 mm, 24.38 carat lustrous charcoal grey stone is certainly the exception and is completely original with a microscopic pebbly appearance of the individual diamond crystals being compressed together within the star during formation and is older than 4.56 billion years. $1,400 - 1,800

Gem Quality Crystals in Vesta Meteorite. Vesta is the second largest asteroid in the asteroid belt with a diameter of over 326 miles and a gigantic impact crater at its South Pole that is so deep that it exposes the asteroids interior. There are three types of Achondrites that originate from Vesta collectively known as HED's, Howardites. Eucrites and Diagenites. Diagenites are the rarest of the three types of stony meteorites and originate from deep beneath the surface of Vesta. This 3 x 2" 14.6 gram complete slice from NWA 7831 is from one of the rare Diagenites and is unique as a Diagenite because it contains translucent gem quality yellow- green crystals of orthopyroxene in its stony matrix. This is unique in stony meteorites and looks somewhat like a Pallasite, an iron-nickel meteorite with olivine crystals. This unique and desirable Diagenite is an achondrite and non-magnetic and was found in Morocco in March 2013 with only one 20 Kg meteorite that was broken into 45 specimens. $850 - 1,100

Libyan Desert Glass and Indochinite Tektites. Tektites are a mixture of earth rocks mixed with a sprinkling of meteorite material from an immense explosive event that occurred when a very large rocky meteorite vaporized before impacting the earth. The resulting mixture forms glass-like mixture. The color is usually black such as the 473 gram 4 x 3½" large specimen from Thailand. It can also be green or yellow if the tektite is formed from sand (silica) such as the 213 gram 4 x 2¼" large specimen of Libyan Desert Glass. Both specimens are much larger than normally found. The large black Indochinite looks something like a black piece of petrified wood with a bark-like surface and several areas of glossy black glass areas. The yellow-green Libyan desert glass has a surface of small depressions looking something like regmaglypts that resulted from gasses escaping when they were solidifying in the atmosphere before being redeposited on the ground. The large 213 gram specimen of Libyan Desert Glass was found in the Sahara desert near the border between Libya and Egypt. This an opportunity to acquire two large very different types of tektites. $525 - 750

Trinitite From First Atomic Bomb Blast. Trinitite is a glassy light green fused silica sand that was created by the first atomic bomb blast near Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. The intense heat of the resulting fireball depressed a 300 yard in diameter crater transforming the desert sand beneath the crater into one of the rarest minerals on earth, Trinitite. Contained within the Trinitite are melted bits of the first atomic bomb itself as well as the supporting structure. This fairly large specimen is 38 x 29 x 5 mm and weighs 4.47 grams which is considerably larger than most pieces available. There is a green glossy color on top of the specimen and a fused gray stone bottom. All available specimens of Trinitite were collected in the late 1940's and early 1950's. In 1953 the entire site was bulldozed and buried by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Trinitite resembles meteorite tektites which were also formed at extremely high temperatures when very large meteorites were vaporized before impacting the ground liquefying the ground material which then solidified as it fell from the sky into a glassy substance known as a Tectite. This rare specimen is contained in a 6 x 5" Riker mount with a picture of the actual 1945 atomic explosion. Trinitite is still mildly radioactive but is considered to be safe to handle but should not be swallowed. $425 - 600
