Daisho Set ca. 1600s by Chikuzen Yoshimasa with Mounts. Very fine Daisho set by Chikuzen Yoshimasa ca. 1600s, that has both the blades as well as the mounts matching. The Dai (Katana) is a very nice copy of a Kamakura Bizen School blade. Yoshimasa was very famous for this style. The hamon of choji midare is very nicely done. The presence of utsuri appears giving the blade an older feel. The ko itame hada is very nice, and in perfect condition. Both swords in excellent condition. The Sho (Wakizashi) is a very wide and strong shaped sword. The very nice gunome hamo done in the Soshu style shows Yoshimasa's versatility. Both blades encased in shirasaya with attestation by Mr. Tanobe of the Japanese Sword Museum. Mountings are quite fine all done in the dragon motif. The fittings are made of shakudo nanako and gold. A special type of wrapping know as "jabara maki" is used on the handles. This is a Daisho set of superior quality. Bot blades signed Chikuzen Ju Minamoto Nobukuni Yoshimasa. Dai is 69 cm. Sho 50.8 cm. $17,500

European Great Helm, Frog Mouth Style Front In the style of 15th Century. Quality, and extraordinarily appealing (in the style of 15 century) European Great Helm with frog's mouth style front and in quite fine condition. The helmet shows early forging with considerable slag and irregular lines that occur at lower temperatures creating the appearance of a grain or skin pattern. Helmet is constructed in three gauges of thickness, heavy in front to withstand blows, medium at center, and lightest at rear where the least threat would occur in a joust. Helmet weighs 9½ lbs. Several small holes at top of helmet accommodated ties to keep internal horsehair pads in place. The attachment latch area has been repaired and two rivets restored, minor holes at rear base from rusting, otherwise a supremely striking piece. Comes with custom wood stand. Helmet roughly 21 x 16 x 14". When originally offered at Little John's Auction, helm was examined by a metallurgist who felt it might have been 15th century. We are not certain (Victorian Era?) and encourage all parties interested to examine in person and perform their own due-diligence. $12,500

EX RARE ROYAL GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE CONVERTED TO PILL LOCK FOR KING LEOPOLD I OR LEOPOLD II. An Extremely Rare Antique ROYAL German Wheel-Lock Sporting Rifle, circa. 1690-1720, Converted to 'PILL-LOCK', circa. 1815 (this technology only lasted 5-10 years). Made for King Leopold I (reigned from 1658-1705) or King Leopold II (reigned 1764-1790) of the Hapsburg/Lorraine Family. 33.5".54 cal. rifled octagon iron barrel with maker's name "F = H = F in Neuetting" inlaid in silver on the top flat of breech. The massive lock has decorative engraving and is maker signed "Jos Dunckl in Schwaz". The full stock is stable with some stress cracks, scratches and dings from use but has some of the highest quality high relief and incised decorative carving. The stock has a signature just under the flat of the cheek (see photos). The cheek side of the butt has an inlaid mother-of-pearl medallion carved with the Royal Cypher of King Leopold. The muzzle has a horn fore-end inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The sliding patch-box cover is made of wood covered in worked horn with mother-of-pearl inlays and a worked sheet silver end piece. The inside of the patch-box was filled in with lead for weight most likely when converted. The furniture is of gilt brass that is wonderfully engraved with scrolls and open work with one of the most spectacular side plates (some sections around the trigger guard area are unfortunately missing). The original trigger guard is missing and was replaced with a period replacement. The rifle is equipped with a set trigger. The rifle measures 47" overall. A fabulous gun exhibiting some of the finest skills of the period and definitely made for a King. The rifle is in good mechanical working order.

Note; This is the first Wheel-lock conversion to Pill Lock we have had the pleasure of examining. The Pill Lock form of firing technology was well ahead of it's time and was not widely accepted. (Remember, the Flintlock was at its zenith at this point). The Pill Lock required tiny pellets of detonating powder (Mercury Fulminate or Potassium Chlorate), when crushed by the fall of the hammer into the flash pan, exploded to fire the main charge of powder in the barrel of the gun. This technology was invented by Scottish clergyman, the Rev. Alexander John Forsyth, and patented by him April 11, 1807. This technology opened the door for a whole new field of possibilities.

The introduction of the percussion cap (a copper cap filled with a small amount of fulminate of mercury) was soon to follow and was being experimented with as early as 1814 and became the 'in vogue' technology from the 1830's to the 1860's. Needless to say, the Pill Lock era of about 5-10 years was over but paved the way.

The Tube Lock was patented by famous English gun maker, Joseph Manton around 1816. $10,000 - 20,000

A GOOD (PAIR) OF LARGE ITALIAN SILVER MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS BY G. BIANCHI. A Good (PAIR) of Large Antique Italian Silver Mounted Flintlock Holster Pistols, circa. 1720-1740 made by G. BIANCHI. 12.25".60 cal. worked steel smooth-bore barrels. Worked steel locks maker signed G. BIANCHI. High relief engraved silver furniture. Full stocks are stable with some minor stress cracks and loses; scratches and dings from years of service. Both pistols are in their original flintlock configuration. 19.75" overall length. A very attractive pair of Italian flintlock pistols in good mechanical working order. Note; These pistols were made with false wood ram rods (most likely for the Middle Eastern Region for possible presentation). The reason the ram rods were false is because the transportation was on horses, camels or elephants. Dropping a ram rod from sitting high up on an animal would render the pistol useless if it could not be reloaded. The people of these regions would wear a lanyard ram rod so it would not get lost. $6,000 - 9,000

UNUSUAL MODIFIED FRENCH MILITARY MODEL YEAR 'AN XIII' FLINTLOCK SERVICE PISTOL. An Interesting Antique Napoleonic War and American War of 1812 Antique French Military Model Year 'An XIII' (1804) Flintlock Service Pistol modified to be trap or ignition gun, circa. dated 1813. 7.75" .69 cal. barrel struck w/inspector's/Proof marks and modified to accept a large bolt to be inserted into the left side about 1" ahead of the breech and when the bore is examined does not effect the firing ability. A wire runs through the grip area and connects to another wire which passes through the rear of the trigger guard bow and attaches to the trigger. When the wire is pulled the pistol will fire. Brass regulation furniture has a pleasing untouched olive color age patina. Lock is marked; 'Manif Imp de Charleville' (French Arsenal at Charleville). The stock is solid w/chips, scratches and dings from years of service. All steel parts are pitted from extended exposure to the elements. Later replacement steel ram rod. In good working mechanical order. 14.5" overall.

AXVQA13

Note; When we received the pistol, the lock was frozen and many of the holes were plugged up. The pistol has since been tastefully restored. The wire has been replaced and now works perfectly. There is a hole in the front portion of the trigger bow for another wire to pass through. Also, another hole passes through the the lower part of the butt cap and exits just under the bottom of the trigger guard allowing another wire to be attached.

This type of added side bolt could be attributed to many circumstances;

1). the pistol may have been fixed to the side of a carriage/wagon, ship or wall as a trap gun.

Brass furniture including a flat side plate in the form of the British Military 2nd Model Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Service Musket. Round faced lock maker signed 'Ketland & Co.'. Stock has had many small restorations over the years to; fore-end at muzzle, just under the lock plate and just above the rear of the lock plate. In good working mechanical order. 16.25" overall. Note; A similar (PAIR) of early flintlock pistols are pictured/published in 'The Kentucky Pistol' by, Roy F. Chandler and James B. Whisker, c. 1994, pp. 170-173. These pistols w/original saddle holsters belonged to Thaddeus Cook who began his Military career as a Lieutenant during the French and Indian War. In that war he saw service with the British General Jeffrey Amherst at Fort Ticonderoga. In 1773, As a Major of State Militia, Cook went with Silas Dean to Westmoreland (then part of the Connecticut Charter, now northern Pennsylvania) to help stabilize the political structure on that wilderness frontier.
Cook was promoted to Colonel and with his 10th Militia Regiment crossed the Delaware River on December 25, 1776 with General George Washington to fight the battle of Trenton.
In 1777, Colonel Thaddeus Cook led his regiment in both battles of Saratoga and also saw service at the British invasions of New Haven and Danbury, Connecticut. He accompanied General Sullivan in 1779 to destroy the Iroquois Confederacy, and is mentioned in Allen Eckert's book The Wilderness War.

In 1787, Colonel Cook was a member of the Connecticut Constitutional Committee which approved that state's adoption of the United States Constitution.

This example may have been part of a larger number of similar pistols made for Militia Officers just before the American Revolution. It is known that the Ketland gun makers had rather unique relationships set up in the Colonies with offices in Birmingham, London, Philadelphia, Maryland and New York City as well as trading post establishments throughout New England like the Hudson Bay Colony. It would appear that they were supplying weapons to any willing buyer which could be interpreted as selling to both sides of the conflict !!! $1,500 - 3,000
