Outstanding Sycee Silver Ewer Celebrating a Key French/Anglo Battle of the Second Opium War, 1860. A spectacular, custom crafted sterling silver ewer with British marks from the mid-19th Century in flawless condition. The commemorative ewer was a gift from a son, Lieut. E.H. Lenon in the 67th Regiment to his father. This regiment was originally raised in 1756 at the start of the Seven Years War (1756-63) as the 2nd Battalion of the 20th Regiment. Two years later it split off to form a separate unit with the number 67 known as The Hampshire Tigers. Stationed in numerous countries in the early 19th century, in 1858 the regiment moved on to China in 1860, where it fought in the Second Opium War (1857-60). Four members of the regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross for the capture of the Taku (or Peiho) Forts (1860) which Lenon was one. The inscription on the ewer reads This jug is made from Sycee silver taken from the Chinese at the storming and capture of the Taku forts Aug.t 1860 presented to T. B. Lennon, Esq. by his affectionate son E.H. Lenon Lien.t 67th Reg. Sycee silver was a type of silver or gold ingot currency used in imperial China from its founding under the Qin dynasty until the fall of the Qing in the 20th century. Sycee were not made by a central bank or mint but by individual silversmiths for local exchange. Ewer measures 13 x 5½ x 5½" and is housed in its original cusom fitted oak wood casket. Burnside, Ambrose E. (1824-1881) Union general; reluctant commander of the Army of the Potomac, relieved of command after Fredericksburg; as commander of the Army of the Ohio, he succeeding in capturing Morgan's Raiders and the siege of Knoxville; was relieved of command of the 9th Corps for mishandling the Petersburg mine assault. Holograph text of a telegraph to Mrs. A.E. Burnside signed ("A.E. Burnside"), 1 page, 5¼ x 8", no place, no date. Almost certainly war date and sent as a telegraph to his wife in Providence, R.I.: "I am very weary. This is the third day since I have had a telegraph. Please telegraph at once. I am quite well." On the verso is part of a hand-drawn map showing a railroad with the towns of Jonesville, Elizabeth, Glasgow, Bowling Green, Gallatin, etc. Light toning and soiling; one small pinhole at fold. Large signature. Affixed at left edge to a 14¼ x 10½" sheet and accompanied by a 14 x 10½" steel engraving by Buttré. $300 - 400

[Spanish American War] U.S. Silk Regimental Battle Flag With 45 Stars. Very scarce, military grade battle flag with the following characteristics: large, almost square-- 66 x 53 in.-- with 45 embroidered stars on each side of the canton, bullion fringe, and red, white, and blue sleeve along hoist edge. Some small splits at edges and a couple of small repairs otherwise in very good condition. Utah became the 45th state in 1896. The 45-star flag was used from then until 1907 when Oklahoma became a state. This was a patriotic period because the Spanish American War took place in 1898. A flag like this one was raised following the successful assault on San Juan Heights, made famous because of the participation of Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. $1,500 - 2,500

In absolutely fine working condition, very well maintained with original handle. The original, case, marked W. T. & B. Two WWII Era US Navy Leather Flying Helmets with Chin Straps, Summer & Winter Versions. Two vintage WWII Era US Navy USN Type NAF 1092 leather flying helmets. Offering both versions, one lined with wool (1092 W) for colder temperatures with chin strap. This piece is in excellent condition with no tears rips or excessive wear. mild corrosion/tarnish to buckles. Leather remains quite supple. Vintage US ARMY AIR FORCE AN-H-15 Flight Helmet & Lined Leather Flying Helmet. Two vintage WWII era helmets. First helmet introduced as the standard summer flying helmet for both the Army Air Force and the US Navy in April of 1943, the AN-H-15 Flight Helmet was the first flying helmet designed under the joint Army/Navy Procurement Program. and manufactured by the Joseph Buegeleisen Company. Superior condition with chin strap. Also offered is a WWII Army Air Force Leather Flying Helmet (wool lined) with partial chin strap. In very good condition, leather remains quite supple. $200 - 300

Tojo, Hideki, 5 Personal Possessions Including Hanko Stamp, Polished Walnut & Epaulette with Exceptional Provenance. (December 30, 1884 to December 23, 1948) Hideki Tojo, a general of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), the leader of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, and the 40th Prime Minister of Japan from October 17, 1941 to July 22, 1944. Tojo infamously initiated war with the United States by ordering the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After the unconditional surrender of Japan, a suicide attempt, and an international tribunal, Tojo was sentenced to death on November 12, 1948 and executed by hanging a month later .Offered here is a collection of items owned by Tojo, for years in the private collection of a staff sergeant and interpreter for the American occupational forces in Japan at the end of World War II. Orginially obtained from the caretaker of Tojo's home in Shibuya, the Army Staff Sergeant held these items in his possession for his lifetime. They have now been consigned ot Goldberg Collectibles by his son. 1.) Tojo's hanko stamp virtually has remained in its original condition save for two known inked impressions made of the stamp to confirm the name Tojo 4 x 3 x 3 cm. 2.) Polished walnut of Tojo's. Vintage polished walnuts are a significant collectible in China and Japan, walnut measures 4 x 4 x 4 cm and has been polished to a deep caramel color in imaculate condition. 3.) One of Tojo's Lieut. General epaulettes from the late 1930s, finally 4.) a key stamped TENPO, Tokyo and the number 39 C. Absolutely no knowledge whatsoever what it opened, but was part of the items received. Also included a string of wooden beads that seemingly appear modern but have been in the collection as well as the handkerchiefs the items were wrapped for decades. Collection comes with a detailed history of the pieces and the history of the Staff Sergeant stationed in Japan at General Headquraters and how these came to be in his possession 70+ years ago. $8,500

Doolittle, James H. (1896-1993). Aviation pioneer and Lieutenant General of the U.S. Army Air Corps who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership during a raid of Japan during World War II. Lot of two items. 1. Signed photo ("J.H. Doolittle"), black and white, 8 x 10", n.p., n.d. With a holograph inscription "To the Kohlbeeks: / With kindest personal / regards." A handsome portrait of the mature officer. With just a few tiny chips along the left edge, this photo is fine. 2. Signature ("J.H. Doolittle") on a First Day Cover for the United Nations Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, postmarked New York, February 14, 1972. Additionally signed by Paul W. Tibbets ("Paul W. Tibbets"), the pilot of the plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima, and Edward Teller ("Edward Teller"), the "father of the hydrogen bomb". Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA. A rare combination of signers, and in fine condition. $200 - 300

Hardy, Sir Thomas Masterman, 1st Baronet. (1769-1839) Officer of the Royal Navy taking part in some of the most historic naval battles in British history. He served as flag captain to Admiral Lord Nelson, and commanded HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson was shot as he paced the decks with Hardy, and as he lay dying, Nelson's famous remark of "Kiss me, Hardy" was directed at him. In Hardy's honor The Hardy Monument, a 72-foot high tower, was erected on Dorset's Black Down hill in 1844 by public subscription. Offered is a scarce autographed letter signed while at the Greenwich Hospital in May, 1939 and died the following September. This is professionally presented with laser copy of the front of letter so the verso could be exhibited with Hardy's signature. Also included is an engraving of Hardy and an image of Nelson for a complete bit of British Naval History in a nice presentation. Measures 16 x 26". $250 - 400

American five-star general, Medal of Honor recipient, and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, his leadership in the Pacific theater during World War II was integral to the ultimate success of the Allied Powers. Signed photo ("Douglas MacArthur"), black and white, 5¾ x 7¾", n.p., n.d. Signature appears in black ink at bottom center, across the General’s light colored pants. Small pieces of tape at the upper left, upper right, and lower right corners, extending no more than ½" into the photo itself, affect neither the signature nor the overall handsome quality of the photograph. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA. In very good to fine condition.

Even in this candid shot, the Big Chief looks characteristically impressive. $500 - 700
