Lot 341		Salisbury, Francis Owen. The Coronation of Their Royal Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, 1937. (1874-1962). English artist known for his portraits and depictions of ceremonial events, he was steadfastly conservative in his artistic view and a critic of the Modern Art movement. Well known on both sides of the Atlantic, Salisbury's forte were his large canvases portraying historical and national events. The engraving offered here was taken from the original "The Coronation of their Royal Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, 1937", one of his most significant works. This piece was gifted to Ambassador Joseph E. Davies and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Salisbury's autograph inscription, "To his Excellency Ambassador Joseph E. Davies and M Post Davies recalling the pleasure of the settings, May 1937" appears in left border, with his bold signature at the lower right. The engraving measures 22 x 34" and is in fine condition, with just a minor scrape in hem of robe likely at time of inscription. Estimated Value $800 - 1,000 From The Estate of Joseph E. Davies. Lot 343		Audubon, John James. Le Petit Caporal, Plate LXXV. (1785-1851) French Haiti born, American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter Audubon was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827�1839) is considered the finest ever illustrated and researched. This monumental work consists of 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species, made from engraved copper plates of various sizes depending on the size of the image. The original edition was engraved in aquatint by Robert Havell, Jr. A hand-aquatinted, copper plate engraving with the J. Whatman watermark dated 1833 and measures 30 x 21½". Engraving was trimmed for framing from full sheet of 39 x 26½". There has been expert paper restoration in upper right corner within plate area from a puncture, the repair 3 x 3" square, and does encroach into plate number. Image of merlin or pigeon hawk, is very clean with excellent colors. Original Audubon aquatints from the early 1800s are highly prized. And with regard to the full volume set, The Economist (2010) in its ranking of the most expensive books of all time has five places in the top ten occupied by The Birds of America. (1785-1851) French Haiti born, American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter Audubon was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. Lot 345		Audubon, John Woodhouse. Neotoma Drummondii, Rich. Rocky Mountain Neotoma. No. 6, Plate XXIX. From the Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, marked "Lith. Printed & Col'd. by J.T. Bowen, Phila, 1843". 21 x 27", matted to 24 x 30". The pair of neotomas shown in actual size. A small blue "E.D.S. Library / Peabody stamp is unobtrusively located at the lower edge of the print. Minor areas of toning (possible damp staining) are seen at the borders and some cracking along the edges, not affecting the image. With the help of his son, John Woodhouse Audubon, John James Audubon began to document and paint the mammals of North America in 1839. When John James' health declined in 1846, John Woodhouse took over the project. Rev. John Bachman researched and described each species and J.T. (1904-1989) The most celebrated and prominent surrealist painter of the 20th century, who also created works in sculpture, film and photography. Dalí also prove one of the most colorful and eccentric personalities in the field of art which only served to elevate his position in mainstream culture. Offered here is an original engraving Le Beastiaire de la Fontaine, on Arches, signed in pencil and numbered 13/250 a suite of 12 original engravings with color added by pochoir (Rigal) published in 1974 by Les Maitres Contemporaines in Paris. Based on a collection of fables, this piece is referred to as "The Sick Deer". 22½ x 19½" and beautifully framed in gilt wood to 46 x 36" with small metal engraving identifying work by Salvador Dalí. Lot 348		Daumier, Honoré. Pair of lithographic prints from the "Les gens de justice" series. Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was a French artist known for his caricatures of French politics and society. In the mid-1840s, he began his series "Les Gens de Justice," a satire on the legal profession covering 39 legal themes. One depicts a lawyer enthusiastically making his case before a sleeping audience and titled "Les gens de justice", initialed "h.D." It is numbered "249/500" and inscribed in pencil in the lower margin. 9 x 12" and is framed to 12 x 15".Second litho, features an awkward courtroom embrace, is initialed "h.D." and inscribed "Les beaux jours de la vie / Un triomphe d'avocat." in the plate. "338/500" and inscribed in pencil in the lower margin. 12 x 9" and is framed to 15 x 12". Water stain confined to the margin of the second print, otherwise pair are fine.
