Randall, James R (1839 -1908). American journalist and poet, best remembered as the author of "Maryland, My Maryland." The nine-stanza poem was written by Randall in 1861 as a call for the South to fight the Union. It refers to President Lincoln as a "tyrant," "despot," and "Vandal," and to the Union as "Northern scum." It also uses the phrase "sic semper," [thus always] which was shouted by Marylander John Wilkes Booth while assassinating Lincoln. The poem was set to the tune of "Lauriger Horatius" ("O Tannenbaum") and was used as a battle hymn by the South during the Civil War. In 1939, the song was adopted by Maryland's state assembly as the state song.

Autograph quotation signed ("James R. Randall"), 1 page, 7 x 7¾", on letterhead of The Augusta Chronicle, n.p., n.d. Being the seventh stanza of his poem "Maryland, My Maryland," it reads:

"I see the blush upon thy cheek, Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek, Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!" Estimated Value $500 - 800

Verdi, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Italian composer of operas best known for such works as Rigoletto (1851), La Traviata (1853), Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and Falstaff (1893). Autograph letter signed ("G. Verdi"), in Italian, 2 pages, recto & verso, 8-1/4 x 5", Genoa, Italy, December 7, 1871. Verdi politely declines a request regarding both him and his wife, Giuseppina Strepponi, in a professional context, expressing their shared desire to live a simple life out of the spotlight -- ironic, perhaps, as the request came in the same year that one of his most celebrated operas, Aida, was first performed in Cairo, Egypt. He would spend much of 1872 and 1873 supervising subsequent Italian productions of the piece in Milan, Parma, and Naples. Some discoloration due to moisture, and bleeding of the ink as a result, affecting only the last two lines of the first page. Folded horizontally and vertically to accommodate an envelope. In very good condition. Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000
