Lot 108
The 51st United States Colored Infantry Regiment Arms Itself. Originally formed from freed slaves in 1863, the 51st, then designated the 1st Mississippi, was one of the first Black regiments raised during the Civil War. It proved to be an excellent unit, seeing combat less than a month after it was initially formed. This pair of oversized documents (10 x 19") details the complete rearmament of the 51st United States Colored Infantry in June, 1864, likely in reponse to them becoming a regular United States Regiment. Both documents are in very good to fine condition, with just some weakening at the folds.

605 Enfield rifles, all listed as unserviceable, were exchanged for 520 Springfield rifled muskets. As the 1st Mississippi, the 51st was raised as an experiment on the part of Union generals seeking to prove that Blacks could serve effectively in the army. As such, they had no access to Federal weapons, except for what could be scrounged from the regular army's cast offs. These documents demonstrate an acknowledgment of the Negro soldier's worth and a change of attitude toward Black regiments: they were now being armed in the same manner as the White soldiers. Estimated Value $300 - 500

Lot 110
Lot of Civil War and Reconstruction Era Documents. This 46-piece collection includes items dating to the American Civil War and the years shortly thereafter signed by such notable figures as: novelist, lecturer, and war correspondant Charles Carleton Coffin (1823-1896); Confederate Senator for Virginia William Cabell Rives (1793-1868); Union Army General and U.S. Grant's Secretary of the Interior, Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900); Union Brigadier-General Israel Vogdes (1816-1889); and Union Army Colonel and newspaper editor Smith Dykins Atkins (1836-1913).

The lot features an autograph letter signed by Samuel Emerson Opdycke (1830-1884), 1 page, 4 x 7¾", Rocky Face Ridge, Georgia, May 8, 1864. To Brigadier General Charles Garrison Harker. In it, Opdycke, Colonel of the 125th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, provides a progress report to his superior: "The crest is ours + we are driving the enemy south towards Dalton". The week-long battle of Rocky Face Ridge initiated General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, conflicts resulting in the loss of more than 65,000 men, nearly half of whom were Union soldiers. The capture of Atlanta boosted Northern morale and contributed to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln. Handsomely framed with an engraved illustration of the engagement, the letter is in very good condition, with just minor staining at the lower right and a single tear along the upper margin, none of which obscure Opdycke's clean, bold script. Estimated Value $500 - 700

"You will want among the other things, tool, nails, some locks & hinges -- also a good supply of ammunition…." World War II Airborne Leaflet Propaganda, Collection of 8. Airborne leaflet propaganda was a form of psychological warfare in which leaflets (flyers) were scattered in the air. Military forces used aircraft to drop leaflets in order to alter the behavior of combatants and non-combatants in enemy-controlled territory, sometimes in conjunction with air strikes. Offered is a collection of examples from WWII. First and most compelling is a lurid Japanese flyer, 5 x 7", dropped on Australian ships and territories. The colorful leaflets with explicit artwork suggests the Australians give up the fight so they can go home to protect their families, since "BLACKS" and "YANKS" were raping wives, daughters and sweethearts. Another is a Japanese flyer, 6½ x 10½", warning of American bombings in striking two-color artwork in deep blue-black ink and fiery reds to convey blood and destruction. From Germany, 5 different flyers, all 8 x 11", with 4 dropped on the U.K. urging surrender to the German Army. A 5th flyer aimed at British soldiers, states that "The Yanks" are soliciting and romancing their girlfriends and wives. The final is an American leaflet in English and Japanese dropped on Japanese occupied areas guaranteeing humane treatment on presentation to any American soldier by surrendering or "ceasing resistance". All pieces are in very fine to excellent condition and remarkable tools of war for any collector. Estimated Value $400 - 800

Villa, Francisco (Pancho), Remarkable Collection of Vintage Original Photographs. Born José Doroteo Arango (1878-1923), "Pancho" Villa was a Mexican Revolutionary general and one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution. The material in this collection comes from the estate of Barry Hogarty (1876-1971), who was kidnapped by Villa and his men while working in Mexico and subsequently released, but not before the two became good friends. Many of the photos were most likely taken by Hogarty. Interesting images of Pancho Villa on horseback with his officers, one with his secretary and another with friends at a pool wearing a swimsuit. Every photo has notations on verso. When newspapers reported Hogarty's release, it was not known if a ransom was paid. One of the photos settles the matter, as it depicts Villa with the man who delivered the funds. A total of 15 black & white photos of Pancho Villa with sizes ranging from 3¼ x 2½" to 3¼ x 5½" two duplicates, one with an arrow pointing to Villa and another with his name in pen. In addition there are 10 black & white photos in the same sizes of Hogarty and his family as well as documentation and history in the form of newspaper clippings, his membership certificates as a Freemason, and the first two pages of the memorial book from his funeral. Obviously, this collection was carefully assembled by a family member. Estimated Value $800 - 1,200
