1837 N-3 R1 Plain Hair Cord PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Variety with Medium Letters on Reverse. Beautiful lustrous mint red mellowing to light olive and steel brown. Half the original mint color remains on each side. The only marks are a small, light rim bruise over star 4 and tiny splashes of slightly darker toning scattered over the reverse. Sharply struck E-MDS with the usual die cracks on the reverse (which are present even on the earliest proof strikes) and no die flowlines. All of the stars show full radial lines and the leaves display sharp veins. A premium example of the date, type, or die variety depending on your collecting objective. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer in 65 at PCGS for the variety. Estimated Value $600-UP

Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. There are a few tiny wisps of darker olive brown toning on both sides. A small vertical streak of dark olive toning over star 5 and a spot of similar toning at the top of the first S in STATES are the only notable marks. MDS. The only notable marks are a dull nick on the jawline near the earlobe and a spot of fine carbon in the dentils at star 1. LDS. 1839/6 N-1 R3 Overdate 9 over 6 NGC graded F15. Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter brown toning on the devices. The two-tone appearance accents the designs and adds to the eye appeal. The devices are smooth but the fields show microscopic roughness. Otherwise the only mark is a tiny, light rim bruise over ER in AMERICA. The overdate feature is strong. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. 1839 N-9 R2 Silly Head NGC graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with a few peeps of underlying faded mint color on both sides. Sharply struck and attractive. The best identifying marks are a puff of darker toning at the top of the D in UNITED and a sprinkle of reddish brown toning from the T in CENT to the I in AMERICA. E-MDS. The bisecting die crack from the dentils over star 5 to the dentils under star 13 is complete but very light, the die lines off the upper left point of star 7 are clear, and there are no rim cud breaks on the obverse. Our grade is MS60. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

1844 N-3 R2 MS60. Beautiful glossy light olive and steel brown with hints of very faded mint color in a few of the protected areas. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are a pair of tiny pinpricks just left of the lowest curl on the neck and a small nick on the coronet over the left top of the T in LIBERTY. A smooth, beautiful cent. Unique late die state, between states d & e, with a strong die crack on the rim outlining where the terminal cud break (die state e) is about to occur. This die state was unknown to Grellman when he wrote the 2001 edition of the reference on the cents of 1840-1857, and this is the only example known to him today. The hair at the top of the ear is a bit softly struck, which is normal for this variety, regardless of the die state. Graded MS63 by Del Bland. A very important cent to the die state specialist.
