The only notable mark is a small nick off the lower right point of star 5. M-LDS with strong rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a smaller one between stars 11 & 12. The repunching on the 81 is clear. An attractive cent with just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. Lot 298		1817 N-6 R1 MS62. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with about 30% of the reverse showing underlying golden tan faded down from mint color. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and this cent offers very nice eye appeal. No spots or stains. The only marks are a couple small nicks on the cheek and a few more in the field before the nose. Sharply struck EDS showing clear dentils on both sides. Frosty flowline luster shows in the fields and protected areas. No roughness or verdigris only a few trivial contact marks. A couple tiny pinpricks on the left edge of the first 1 in the date can help identify this cent. Great eye appeal for the grade, very close to AU50. MDS. The overdate is bold. Lot 306		1819 N-2 R1 Large Date AU50. Glossy light olive and chocolate with overtones of light bluish steel and sea green in protected areas. Traces of faded mint red remain visible on the reverse. No spots or stains. The only marks are a pinprick left of the earlobe and a couple light scratches right of the E in ONE. Sharply struck EDS with smooth, slightly reflective fields. The repunching on the 9 (possibly a 9 over 8) is clear. Very nice eye appeal for the grade, perhaps closer to AU55 than AU50. Lot 311		1820 N-11 R2 Large Date EF40. Glossy medium chocolate brown with lots of lighter brown and frosty tan in protected areas. A small splash of darker reddish chocolate brown toning at the inner point of star 11 is the only notable mark. An attractive cent, just lightly worn. MDS with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. Lot 312		1820 N-12 R3 Large Date AU55. A mint state cent that was very lightly cleaned on the obverse and has retoned nicely. The obverse is glossy light to medium chocolate brown with hints of lighter brown in the fields while the reverse is lustrous olive and bluish steel brown with tiny spots of lighter brown toning inside the wreath. No contact marks. Sharply struck MDS with fine radial die flowlines in the fields while the lump over star 4 is dull but visible. Noyes photo #37320. The best identifying mark is a tiny speck of darker toning in the field close before the mouth. Sharply struck MDS with a die crack through the date and all stars. There is a tiny pinprick low on the neck and microscopic planchet flaking around the F in OF. Looks prooflike on the obverse. Lot 318		1823 Restrike AU58. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with underlying frosty mint luster in the fields and protected areas. A beautiful example, void of any spots, stains, or contact marks. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. Late die state with all the rim cuds and die cracks clear, including the final crack down through TE in STATES. These "Restrikes" were made privately outside the mint using discarded mint dies sold as scrap. The obverse die used was the normal Newcomb-2 variety of 1823, but apparently a reverse die of the type used in 1823 was not available and they substituted a reverse die that had been used for the 1813 Sheldon-293 variety. The result was an "1823" cent that looked nothing like the genuine mint product, but it filled a need for collectors since this date has always been a challenge in high grade. Breen says 49 uncracked examples were struck in 1862 for Joseph J. Mickley before the obverse die broke, and an unknown number of pieces were struck from the cracked dies. Lot 319		1825 N-9 R2 NGC graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light olive and steel brown. At least 25% of the obverse shows mint color, 10% of the reverse. (Your cataloger has seen many with far less mint color in "RB" holders; this one has to be very close to that designation.) The only marks are a carbon spot nestled between the lower left points of star 5, a dull nick low on the neck, and a spot of slightly darker toning at the bottom of the O in OF. None of these marks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. LDS with a fine die crack from the dentils over star 3 to the forelock and microscopic die rust on the portrait. Lot 320		1825 N-9 R2 NGC graded MS61 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate with lustrous lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a spot of slightly darker toning in the field off the upper right point of star 2 and a couple tiny ticks in the field close over the head. MDS with an extremely faint die crack from the dentils over star 3 to the forelock and microscopic die rust on the portrait. An attractive, nicely struck cent. This piece is the plate coin for the die variety in John Wright's reference on the cents of 1816-1839. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Rasmussen provenance are noted on the NGC label. The reverse is uncracked, the dentils are crisp, and the die lines under the end of the wreath stem are clear. The only marks are a tiny nick on the jawline, a couple more on the truncation over the 8, and a spot of slightly darker toning on the first S in STATES. E-MDS. There are microscopic radial die flowlines in the fields near the dentils but the misplaced first S in STATES (left of the first S in STATES) and the misplaced O in OF (left of the normal O) are clear. The obverse is smooth and choice while the reverse displays microscopic dirt in the fields and protected areas. The only notable marks are a few very dull scratches above and to the right of the date and a shallow streak of planchet flakes or laminations connecting the top of the F in OF to the foot of the adjacent A in AMERICA. E-MDS. The die crack off the bust tip has not formed. Rather well struck for this popular "Redbook" variety, which usually comes with significant weakness on the stars and along the top of the head. Lot 338		1831 N-7 R1 Large Letters Reverse AU50. Frosty light brown and tan with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and puffs of darker bluish steel toning at AM and RI in AMERICA. Underlying mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal is excellent. The notable marks are a dull diagonal nick left of the ear lobe and a small spot of darker toning in the field right of the lower right point of star 2. MDS. The fields are lightly flowlined but the crumbling in the notch of the R in AMERICA has not formed. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot orientation. Lot 339		1833 N-2 R2 MS60. Very attractive lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate. Essentially flawless. The best identifying marks are a faint hairline scratch on the jaw and a hint of slightly darker toning on the first S in STATES. E-MDS with the reverse rotated 30 degrees clockwise from the normal head-to-foot orientation. Lot 340		1834 N-1 R1 Small 8, Large Stars PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with satiny mint frost covering the fields and protected areas. No notable marks, but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the design. MDS with the repunching inside the C in AMERICA still clear. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW. Called MS60 net AU55 in the Noyes census, his photo #21746. A very nice cent with choice mint state eye appeal. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Lot 341		1835 N-2 R3 Head of 1834 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Beautiful medium chocolate brown and steel with 10% of the mint color remaining, mostly on the reverse. There is a splash of slightly reddish chocolate toning at stars 9-11, and microscopic traces of very fine verdigris or dirt can be found in this area. The only other mark is a faint streak of slightly darker toning from star 2 to star 4. The reverse is choice, just a couple light nicks under the wreath from flawless. Sharply struck EDS with prooflike fields on both sides. A remarkable cent, certainly one of the first struck from this pair of dies. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #33270. Our grade is MS60. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Lot 342		1835 N-8 R1 Head of 1836 MS62. Very attractive lustrous light bluish steel and light olive brown with peeps of very faded mint color in a few of the protected areas on the obverse. The only flaws, and they are insignificant, are a spot of lighter reddish brown toning in the field under the hair bun and a light scuff on the truncation just left of the lowest curl. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. MDS with a die crack that meanders from the rim up through the 1 and neck to the bottom of the ear where it fades away. Estimated Value $400-UP Ex R. J. Rudolph Collection.
