1881 $2.50 Liberty PCGS PF66 CAM. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC Approved. Delicate golden toning is evident on the obverse and the reverse of this lovely piece, which offers strong reflectivity from the orange-peel fields and frosted devices. The Cameo contrast builds on the visual appeal total, which combined with the epic clean surfaces and rich golden hues, makes this coin simply irresistable. A scant 51 pieces were struck in Proof, and this example stands tall as one of the finest seen by PCGS in all categories, and comes right to the top for those in the Cameo designation! A prize addition to this incredible 1881 Proof set, and while it might be available individually, it also might be sold with the entire set. Lot 1556
1881 $3 Gold PCGS PF66 CAM. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC Approved. A marvelous proof example that warrants a strong bid for it's originality, rarity, and eye appeal. Notice the Cameo contrast with the orange peel effect in the fields that produces a wonderful depth of reflectivity, combined with the seductive frost on all the devices. Only 54 pieces were coined in the Proof format, 54 for the entire year. How many of those exist today? Possibly as many as 50 pieces, but this is doubtful as most such early Proofs suffered at least 20 percent of the issue being lost or spent. There are at least a few that are known to have been spent and circulated from this paltry beginning. There are some trivial light specks on the reverse, common to these early gold Proofs, which are not at all destracting and can aid in tracing prior auction appearances. Certain to delight any specialist of this series, and one of the very finest Cameo coins of this date. There are no more than a few Deep Cameo coins to represent this issue as well, thus the desirability factor is high for this handsome piece. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67 Cameo (PCGS # 88045) Estimated Value $50,000-UP

Lot 1557
1881 $5 Liberty PCGS PF67 CAM. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. Deep orange hues can be seen covering the majority of the surfaces on both sides of this extraordinary piece. A beautifully original coin that would be a fantastic addition to any collection, not only for its evident beauty, but for the fantastic surfaces as well. Add to this the Cameo contrast and you have a determined winner here that will dominate any competition. Of the orignal mintage of 42 pieces it appears that no more than 15 to 20 exist today. This one is far and away the finest seen by PCGS (in all designations), but is tied with one other seen by NGC. Clearly there was quite a high attrition rate on these early gold proofs than is generally known. If you have been seeking a high end Superb Gem with Cameo contrast, your choices are quite limited, so bid accordingly if you hope to capture this captivating coin. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. Tied for the finest example graded at both services (PCGS # 88476) Estimated Value $70,000-UP

Lot 1558
1881 $10 Liberty PCGS PF64 CAM. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. CAC Approved. A trace of vivid gold and copper toning can be seen on both sides attesting to the wholesome originality of this monumental rarity. The orignal mintage of 40 pieces has been reduced by time, attrition and various economic troubles to perhasp as few as 10 coins today. One exists in the Ultra Cameo designation seen by NGC and another ealry strike with this contrast resides at the Smithsonian. However, the focus here was to find the most exquisite Cameo designated Proof of each date certified by PCGS, and here is the perfect coin. It is by far the finest of two graded with the Cameo designation by PCGS, the other being a distant PR-61 Cameo. Notice the regal orange peel texture in the fields, and how the fields seem to fall away from the frosted devices when examined. Such contrast is so compelling to view, it makes any numismatist desire to study the surfaces for hours. At the time these 1881 gold eagles were struck, they represented a considerable sum of money, even for the wealthy, thus most were eventually spent as hard times came and went, and no doubt the majority of these proofs were lost due to unfortunate circumstances of their initial owners. Today, those that do survive have become far more valuable and desirable. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 88821) Estimated Value $30,000-UP

1881 $20 Liberty PCGS PF65 DC. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. A phenomenal Deep Cameo Proof Double Eagle. This magnificent Gem captures the viewer's attention immediately. The magnificent eye appeal is enhanced beautifully by radiant golden toning. Soothing shades of sunset golden orange blanket both sides. The original minatege came in on the high side at 61 pieces, however; today there are no more than 20 pieces known. Remarkably, there are no Cameo examples currently certified by PCGS so a Deep Cameo example was obtained for this breathtaking 1881 proof set. As far as the unusal cluster of Gem Proof-65 Deep Cameo coins it is possible that some duplication exists in that number graded, but research will be fruitful in trackng down how many exist based on the number of auction appearances over the generations. Not only is this a rarity in all proof grades, but circulation strikes were limited to 2,199 pieces of which abput 40 to 60 exist today. Virtually all of these were found in overseas hoards and returned to our shores in the last couple of generations. Of course Proof examples are the most desirable, and here is one of the absolute finest examples to exist. To have the opportunity to purchase of coin of this incredible quality is exceedingly rare. We note a shiny area on Liberty's upper lip and chin as made, mentioned for identification purposes. Pop 5; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 99097) Estimated Value $140,000-UP
