Lot 1436
1850. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin with just a touch of pale gold near the rims. This is the repunched date variety with the base of the 1 misplaced well south down on the flat rim of the coin. A popular variety with collectors as such. Furthermore, despite a rather generous mintage, the vast majority of this issue was melted in the next few years, as the price of silver jumped up in relation to gold due to the gold discoveries in California in that period. This puts high demand on all 1850 quarters when they come to market, especially true when a Mint State coin like this is available. Pop 3; 2 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 5415) .
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,400.

1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. A hint of light gold tone. Only 30 examples have long believed to have been minted, but that number may be too low as roughly double that number appears in the population data of PCGS and NGC. What is known is that these are tough to find today, and while a few more may be been struck than traditionally believed, that does not diminish the desirability of this lovely coin. One other point of interest is noted here, that is the Proof reverse die suffered some sort of injury and was repaired, evidence can be seen both above and below the right wing of the eagle, and all Proof 1856 quarters examined show these unusual heavy die polishing lines. Pop 8; 3 finer in 65. (PCGS # 5552) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

1857-S. PCGS graded MS-64. A white coin with mirror surfaces on both sides. Only 82,000 struck and Mint State examples are rarely seen or offered. This one is tied with the finest seen by PCGS of this prized date, and as such is a true specialist's coin. The Large S mintmark is clear, and the strike is bold throughout. An important condition rarity! Pop 4; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5444) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.
