Lot 1368
1909-S. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Well struck and fully red. Popular key date which is seldom found with the combination of Gem surface quality with full mint Red! Only 484,000 were struck at the San Francisco Mint before it was determined that designer's initials V.D.B. (for Victor David Brenner) were too prominent on the lower reverse and should be removed. Historically, coin designer's here had not really signed their work in this fashion (think Gobrecht on the 1836 silver dollars) and such a visible statement of artistry was frowned upon. It is interesting to note that a few years after 1909 the engraver Brenner died, and his initials were restored (but much tinier) on the lower edge of Lincoln's shoulder. Thus the 909-S V.D.B. has remained one of the most sought-after Lincoln cents virtually from the time these were struck, with their popularity growing year after year with each successive generation of collector (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
