Lot 875
1854 N-1 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous light bluish steel brown and olive with traces of faded mint red remaining visible on both sides. The only defects are a shallow low spot on the neck (which is quite common on this variety), another low spot on the nose in front of the eye, and a spot of very fine carbon on the upper half of the N in ONE. LDS, die state c. Fine flowlines extend from the bases of the 1 & 4 to the dentils below. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2, none finer at PCGS.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

Lot 877
1854 N-9 R2 "Dartboard Obverse" PCGS graded MS64+ Brown. Lustrous light olive brown and steel with faded mint red covering 10% of the obverse, 40% of the reverse. A very attractive cent. The only defect is a faint spot of slightly darker toning at the right corner of the eye, and this spot contains microscopic traces of carbon. The reverse is flawless. MDS, die state b, showing die clashmarks on both sides and a very shallow low spot on the cheek and neck (low spots caused by debris on the die are almost always present on this variety regardless of the die state). The stray 1 that was punched into the right side of the ear is clearly visible, and a portion of the top of the 8 is also visible off the right foot of the Y in LIBERTY. Apparently the person responsible for adding the date to this obverse die decided to test the punches in the center of the die, thereby creating the "Dartboard Obverse" variety. Our grade is MS62+ close to MS63, and tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1854 N-23 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with small peeps of faded mint red showing on both sides. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent and it looks flawless to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a small spot of slightly darker toning on the cheek left of the ear, a small planchet chip (as struck) between the tops of the 1 & 8, and a shallow void on the rim at star 13 (also as struck). MDS, die state b. The die line at star 11 and the fine die lines from the dentils over UNITED are gone and fine die clashmarks show at the right top of the T in CENT. Our grade is MS60, tied with many examples for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 3; 1 finer in 66 at PCGS for the variety .

MDS, die state b, with a double set of die clashmarks on the reverse. Our grade is MS62, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1854 N-30 R6 F12. Sharpness VF20 with an arc of very fine roughness through stars 5-13, uniform microscopic roughness covering the reverse fields, and a light rim bruise at the D in UNITED. Slightly glossy medium brown and chocolate. The repunching under the 185 is extremely faint but the parallel fine die lines at the wreath over the stem are visible. One of only 22 known of this very rare variety, a brief marriage that combines the late state of the N-21 obverse with the early state of the N-23 reverse. All known examples display identical die states.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. "12-Star Obverse." Lustrous dark bluish steel and olive with faded mint color showing through in protected areas on the obverse while about 20% of the reverse shows faded mint red. The fields are smooth and the strike is sharp except for several low spots on the obverse. One of those low spots covers star 6 and effectively obliterates it creating the so-called "12-Star Obverse" die state. Other smaller low spots weaken the bust tip and star 1 while everything else is properly impressed. The best identifying marks are a dull, very light diagonal nick right of star 7, another under star 8, and a dull nick on the rim under the left edge of the 8 in the date. EDS but not the earliest, die state b late, with star 6 completely clogged and star 1 partially clogged. Our grade is MS62. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
