1837 N-13 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Very attractive lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with traces of mellowed mint red showing on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and the eye appeal is outstanding. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet flake on the bust over the 8 (as struck). MDS. The die crack through the top of the legend outside the wreath is clear and the dentils are worn but visible around both sides. Our grade is MS60. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 1837 N-17 R4 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters PCGS graded AU55. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate. Excellent eye appeal showing only a few minor marks. The notable ones are a faint spot of slightly darker toning midway between stars 1 & 2, a few small nicks on the bust, and a tiny nick under the right corner of the eye. E-MDS. There is a small but clearly defined rim cud break at star 5 and the crack through the bottom of UNITED and the ribbon is clear, but the additional die crack from the end of the wreath stem to the dentils has not formed. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 5 finer: 1 in 58+, 2 in 63, 2 in 65.

1838 N-1 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint color remaining on both sides. The only defects, and they are microscopic, are some tiny planchet flakes at the dentil tips above the head (as struck), and a speck of darker toning in the dentils over the first S in STATES. MDS with small but clearly defined rim breaks under the 18 and at star 1 but before the rim cud formed at OF-A. Our grade is MS63.

1838 N-16 R5- PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty uniform light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Looks flawless to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a few minor contact marks. The notable ones are a tiny nick on the chin, a horizontal nick in the field left of the lips, and another off the tip of the bust. A very attractive example of this rare variety. The only marks worthy of mention are a pinprick over the 8 and a tiny scratch under the C in AMERICA. EDS with an uncracked obverse. The overdate 9 over 6 (or inverted 9) is obvious. 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 VG8. Very slightly sharper but there is a trace of microscopic roughness on the face. Otherwise very nice for the grade. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. EDS, before the obverse die cracked. The overdate feature is obvious. A decent lower grade example of this popular "Redbook" variety.

Essentially flawless showing only very light friction on the highpoints of the devices. A trail of microscopic ticks left of star 8 are the best identifying marks, but they are difficult to see even with a good glass. MDS showing radial die flowlines in the fields on both sides. 1841 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and chocolate with traces of mint red showing on both sides, particularly on the reverse where at least 5% of the surface shows mint color. The strike is a bit soft at the ear, coronet over LIB, and along the bottom of the wreath, which is often seen in the later die states of the variety. The notable marks are a reddish chocolate spot at the dentils over star 3, a planchet flake on the neck near the throat, and a faint scuff in the field above star 12. M-LDS, die state c early. The wave in the field behind the main curl is just starting to show. Our grade is AU58. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64.

1841 N-7 R2 NGC graded MS62 Red & Brown. A mint state cent that was very lightly cleaned long ago and has nicely retoned a natural-looking medium chocolate and steel brown with traces of frosty very faded red in protected areas. There are a couple tiny ticks on the throat and two more very light vertical nicks on the jawline, none visible without the aid of a good glass. Rare M-LDS, die state c late, with a radial die crack from the dentils left of the date to the throat with a weaker extension from the top of the head to star 8. Our grade is MS60 net AU55, CC#5 of those known with this die crack in the Grellman census.

1842 N-7 R3 Large Date AU50. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with frosty luster covering much of both sides. Nicely struck for this variety with hair details visible at the top of the ear. A microscopic planchet flake in the center of the neck and a tiny nick under the left foot of the T in CENT are good identifying marks, but you need a glass to see them. LDS, die state b. The die line under the upright of the E in AMERICA is weak and barely visible, and die rust is evident in the fields near the stars. A very nice example of a variety that's difficult to find in top grades.
