Lot 596
1804 S-266b R5 G4. A couple points sharper but lightly burnished and covered with uniform fine to moderate roughness under mostly glossy olive brown and steel toning. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a small chip or pit on the cheek close to the ear. Rare M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break connecting RTY to the rim but no cud over MERIC. The date and legends are complete and easily readable although a few areas are relatively weak.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:658-Rod Burress-the Norman Wolfe collection (lot ticket included).

1804 S-266c R2 G5. Slightly sharper but there is microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a couple dull scratches lost in the hair and a dull pinch on the edge under the 1 in the denominator. Lightly cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy olive brown and bluish steel. LDS, Breen state IV, with cud breaks on both sides. The date and legends are complete and easily readable.

Lot 598
1804 S-266c R2 AG3+. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth surfaces, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. There are a few marks, however, including a planchet lamination void in the field off the chin (as struck), a couple far less obvious scratches under the chin, and a dull nick on the chin. Only the lamination catches your eye. The date is easily readable although the bottom is starting to wear into the rim, and parts of UNITED STATES are weak or missing. Everything else is clear. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. A decent low grade 1804 cent.
Estimated Value $750-UP.

Lot 599
1804 Restrike MS63. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate. No spots or stains, only a few inconspicuous marks including a few ticks around NT in CENT. LDS showing extensive die rust on both sides and strong die cracks on the obverse. The reverse is rotated 85 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. A beautiful example of this popular "cent." These "restrikes" were struck outside the mint circa 1860 using legally obtained scrap dies, the obverse from a modified 1803 S-261 and the reverse from the 1820 N-12 variety. Listed on page 102 in the "Redbook."
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1805 S-267 R1 F15. Sharpness close to VF20 but there are a few tiny rim nicks and bruises on both sides, none notable or distracting but too many to ignore. A curved nick over the hair ribbon and a few rim nicks over ATES are the notable marks. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

Lot 601
1805 S-267 R1 Double Struck Off Center NGC graded VG8. Medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are slightly dull but there is no roughness or verdigris. Double struck. The first impression was centered on the planchet while the second strike was 80% off center to K-4.5. The off-center impression left the lowest curl and 1 from the date visible at the bust tip while TATE is visible over F-AM on the reverse. Another nice mint error, one that is easy to explain based on the evidence. Our grade is G5. The "Mint Error" and "Double Struck 2nd Strike 80% Off Center" features along with the attribution and Mervis provenance are all mentioned on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
