1950-C, $5 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. Fr-1964-G. This broadly margined Gem from the Chicago district is one of only 5 examples from this bank to receive the 66PPQ grade to date by PCGS, with only three finer. As the marketplace finally begins to give small size Federal Reserve Notes the attention that they've long deserved, it is becoming apparent that there are many grade rarities among many series. This is likely due in part to them being long-ignored, as even high grade examples were seldom saved--particularly in any quantities.
Estimated Value $50 - 75.

1950-E, $5 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. Fr-1966-B. The 1950E series was printed in limited numbers, and only for three of the twelve district banks. This New York example, which is from the much scarcer B-G block, is a lovely Gem with ideal color, bright paper, and bold originality. It is one of only five examples from this serial number block graded in all uncirculated grades by PCGS to date, with three at the 65PPQ level and only one (a 66PPQ) finer. If this were a coin, similar population levels would dictate a four-figure (or even higher) price tag. Small Size Federal Reserve Notes remain one of the great areas of collecting where absolute rarity can still be found without an astronomic price tag.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

Lot 1861
1969, $5 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ. Fr-1969-F. This Atlanta district $5 is the single finest known example, as neither PCGS nor PMG has graded a single example in 68PPQ/EPQ besides this beautiful Superb Gem example. It has all of the atrtibutes one would expect for the assigned grade: ideal centering, broad margins, and outstanding originality. Estimating a note like this is no more than a guess, as Set Registry competitors will sometimes drive bidding on a note like this to much higher levels than might be expected. Any reasonable expectation, however, would be for this "top pop" note to reach a minimum of our likely conservative estimate.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

1950, $10 Federal Reserve Note. Narrow Star Note. PCGS Very Fine 20PPQ. Fr-2010-H*. This very scarce St. Louis star note is the narrow back plate variety, and one of just two examples graded by PCGS Currency to date (the other is an error note). The marketplace has relatively ignored small size Federal Reserve Notes for many years, but there are plenty of signs that this is changing. New research combined with increased collector interest is creating increased demand, and previously unknown rarities such as this note will continue to see strong demand as the market adjusts to the reality that some of these early small size Feds are indeed far rarer than was previously suspected.
