1928-D, $2 Legal Tender Note. Mule Star Note. PCGS Very Fine 20PPQ. Fr-1505*. KL-1617*. The "mule" variety of the 1928D series, with a micro back plate number (#288 or lower), are actually printed from series 1928D face plates matched with older series 1928C back plates. This example, which bears micro back plate number 261, is a wholly original example with terrific eye appeal for a note that obviously spent some time in the channels of commerce.

1928-B, $1 Silver Certificate. X-B Block Experimental Issue. PCGS Fine 15. Fr-1602. KL-1447. The experimental issues from the 1928A and 1928B series were designed to determine the effects of changing the relative amounts of linen and cotton paper fibers in the paper. Each of the differently proportioned experimental mixtures were assigned special serial number blocks in the X-B and Y-B ranges, with the Z-B block assigned as the control group. This is a pleasing example from the X-B block, with no mentionable flaws whatsoever for the grade.

Although there are a few small edge splits and tears, this piece is a fully intact and acceptable hole-filler for a notoriously scarce issue. It's also from one of the more difficult-to-locate serial number blocks, the D-B block which is listed for a significant premium over the more "common" blocks in the Schwartz & Lindquist reference.

The 1928E is the well-known key to the $1 Small Size Silver Certificate series, with collector demand that well exceeds the supply of surviving note. This example from the scarcer H-B block received an apparent grade from PCGS due to a bit of minor edge damage and a teller stamp on the back, and it represents an affordable example for the budget-conscious collector.
