Raphael Kirchner "Couples Between Red Borders". Lot of six beautiful Kirchner postcards, signed in the plate. "Couples Between Red Borders," three cards marked "Nürnberg: Theo. Stroefer's Kunstverlang, Serie 148" with numbers 2, 5, 6; two cards are marked "E.A.W. Druck von Christophe Reissers Söhne, Wien, V." and one is unmarked. Undivided backs. Unused, chip at bottom of one card, same card has corner creases. Overall, very good condition.

Bright red borders frame couples walking in the rain, enjoying an evening out, and sharing a cigarette. Some of the couples act demurely, others seem a little less than respectable.

Divided backs, two cards are slightly larger than the others due to a separate press run (not trimmed). Three cards have been used, edge wear is evident on a few of the cards, one card has a slight smudge on the recto from a postmark. Overall, good to very good condition.

Beautifully colored, featuring saucy motorists in fashionable automobile attire.

Raphael Kirchner Glamour Shots. Lot of four beautiful Kirchner postcards, signed in the plate. "Riquette et son chien," "La pisciculture à Montmartre," "Lulu" and "Danseuse de Montmartre;" published by Marque L-E, Paris. Divided backs. Unused, edge wear, minor soil, "Lulu" has very small surface abrasions. Overall, good to very good condition.

Two semi-nudes and two scenes of the bohemian life make up this lovely collection. Kirchner's later "Glamour" period was a stylistic change from earlier work, but his attention to the female form has remained.

Fate, in the guise of beautiful women, plays with courting couples as if they were puppets.

Raphael Kirchner "San Toy". Lot of six beautiful Kirchner postcards, signed in the plate. "San Toy," unmarked. Undivided backs. One was used in 1903, minor foxing on two cards and one card shows some fading at the top edge. Overall, very good condition.

Apparently the San Toy series originated as a result of an English operetta first performed in 1898. The beautiful Chinese motifs with gilt highlights are quite striking.

Issued around 1910, this postcard was part of a series of drawings commissioned from various artists for the Vin Mariani spirits company. Mucha has used finely drawn lines, with dramatic shading, to mimic the style of an engraving.

Used, penciled note in Czech, postmarked 1902. Minor toning recto and verso, penciled notations on recto in white field, water damage at far left edge has resulted in minor chipping and a stain, blue ink from another postcard has transferred to white field. Good to very good condition.

Designed to showcase the Vysko Exhibition of Agriculture, Industry and Ethnology. This image was taken from the first postcard created for his country in 1902, the image echoes Mucha's Paris work while adapting costume and background for the Czech audience.

The French caption to this tableau reads "Profile of a pure maiden. Her expression is deep and rapturous. The hair is abundant and styled in natural cascades. The body is supple with impeccable lines, molded cleverly in a silken fabric."

Alphonse Mucha's Czech Period. Lot of three postcards illustrated by Alphonse Mucha, signed in the plate. 1. 8th Annual Sokol Festival in 1926, printed in Prague. Divided back. Used: postmarked July 5, 1926. Small amount of ink from postmark has bled through to white field, very minor corner wear. Very good condition. 2. 1928 Summer Festival, printed in Prague. Divided back. Unused. Minor toning, otherwise fine. 3. Nativity Scene, printed in Prague. Used: postmarked December 20, 1943. Faint pigment loss along soft crease. Fine condition.

Following World War I, Mucha returned to Czechoslovakia and his art changed. Commissioned to design new currency and postage stamps, Mucha immersed himself in the life of the newly formed country and spent the next two decades producing work with a distinctly Czech flavor.

This look back at one of the most magnificent Expositions ever held features delicately colored drawings depicting such exotic locales as the Illuminated Palace, the Cambodian Palace, the Royal British Pavilion and the Towers of Berne.

Primarily undivided backs.Toning and foxing, a few of the cards have visible album marks, the bottom ¼ of one card is torn away, five cards have noticeable water damage at the top left. Conditions range from fair to fine.

Likely dating from the early 20th century, the colorful flags of Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and other countries make this a very attractive lot. A true sense of the nationalism that was beginning to simmer worldwide is evident in these cards with their proudly printed anthems.
