Brooch, Unusual and Scarce, in Black Composition. Circa late 19th century. Fashioned of a hard black substance somewhat reminiscent of early bakelite, this brooch is comprised of two assembled pieces. The head of a woman appears at the right, her shoulders seen from the back, rests upon a wreath of leaves and berries. The woman is fairly young with a high coiffure wreathed with flowers. Pin and catch at back. Height: 53 mm. Brooch is pristine and thus a rare survival for costume jewelry of these early manmade materials.

Brooches, Pair with Painted Scenes. European, circa 19th - early 20th century. Two brooches. The earliest with scenic miniature is painted perhaps on ivory and depicts a massive bridge receding to a rocky butte with a castle to the side. Two individuals fishing with poles appear in the foreground. Mounted in a simple but sturdy silver brooch with twisted wire frame. The second piece features a child-like girl with her hands clasped in prayer amid a rustic background. In an openwork floral silver frame marked "800." Widths: 55 mm; 38 mm. Both nicely preserved.

Cameo Brooch, Italian, Large and Impressive. Circa late 19th century. Finely carved shell cameo featuring a heroic bust of the Greek hero, Perseus. With his head in profile to the right he wears the winged cap of Mercury. With a light beard on his cheek. A carved raised border surrounds the image. The youthful hero's likeness was likely modeled after that of Alexander the Great. In a contemporary gold frame, with gilt filigree border. Measuring 56 mm. A handsome and bold image, the brooch eminently suitable for use today.

Cameo of Flora in Openwork Gold Brooch. Circa 1900-1915. Flora appears similar to previous lot, however roses solely adorn her hair. Again the artist has carved the shell to make best use of its color possibilities. The American frame, marked 10 Kt, is a reddish gold with accents of yellow leaves on four sides. Height: 47 mm. Finely preserved, the cameo remains a lovely costume accessory to this day.

Cameo of Flora, Large and Elaborate. Circa 1900-1915. Impressive and lovely, this Italian cameo makes good use of the warm hues of the conch shell. Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, is seen in bust right, her hair wreathed in roses with additional blooms draped over her shoulders. Her flesh is a delicate peach color, her garment creme, and the roses pastel oranges. Set in a simple gilt frame with twisted wire edging. Height: 68 mm. A jewel!

Cameo of Maenad, Antique Shell, in Ornate Brooch. Circa later 19th century. Upper body of a maenad appears at right, arising from lunar crescent below. She is draped in loose garments with an animal skin over shoulder and a wreath of grapes and leaves in her hair. She also holds a cluster grapes and a thyrsus. The Italian cameo is set in gold filled or gilt. Continental frame, with fillet and wreath motifs on four sides. Height: 49 mm. Intact, with little wear. A quaint period piece.

Cameo, Attractive Classical Tri-Colored Bust. Carved shell cameo with three colored layers featuring a pleasing portrait of a Greek nymph or goddess. Her head is in profile turned right and drapery blankets her shoulders. Utilizing another colored layer of the shell, the wreath of roses on her head is picked out in tones of pink, brown, and dark red. In contemporary gold or gold-filled frame. Height: 42 mm. Some old repairs to the gold mount, otherwise a quite appealing cameo, with portrait-like features to the girl.

Cameo, Beautiful Mythological. Circa late 19th century. In enameled 18 Kt Gold. Cameo is apparently in molded glass paste, closely mimicking a natural sardonyx, and portrays a scene in superb style depicting Mercury at right, handing a baby to a woman seated on a rock. Her outstretched arms are draped with an animal's skin. The raised groundline features the artist's signature: "Pestrini." This gold brooch is enameled in blue and white on front, the back with engraved with swags and an arabesque cartouche. Width: 55 mm. An impressive, and wearable jewel. Pristine!

Cameo, Italian Shell, of Venus. Late 19th century. The warmly toned conch shell has been cut into a hexagon shape and illustrates a famous ancient statue of Venus discovered in present day Capri. The goddess is diademed and semi-draped with her arms to the side holding items now lost. The base is inscribed, "VENEREI CAPUA." Height: 58 mm. Interesting and scarce.

Cameos, Pair, Continental Stone. Circa mid-19th century. The first, certainly of Italian origin, is carved in "lava stone" indigenous to southern Italy. This bust crafted in a handsome classical style depicts Diana, goddess of the hunt. Her shoulders are viewed from the back with her head in profile to the left. Bordered in a contemporary gold frame with filigree border. The second piece is similar in a violet-tinged, reddish marble likely from central Italy portraying a classically-inspired woman's profile. She wears a beaded necklace and her elaborate coiffure of corkscrew curls is bound with a ribbon. In a gilded bronze frame, similar to the previous cameo. The former stone with some wear, the latter, in choice condition. Both with antique repairs to the metal frames. Measuring 42 mm. and 40 mm. An appealing lot of the type of artistic souvenirs produced for tourists making the "Grand Tour" of Italy's classical sites.

The Flora in pink shell is crafted in high relief and remains unset. The second cameo in brown and tan hues, is set in a yellow gold brooch frame marked 9 Kt. The latter is of molded brown glass depicting a pair of Victorian era beauties. All nicely preserved. Heights: 30-35 mm. Good jeweler's lot.

Necklace, Hand Carved Ivory. China, circa 20th century. Beaded ivory necklace featuring two large beads, carved in the likeness of a young man and woman. The couple has been incised with color accents -- the raven haired woman wears a floral kimono and holds a fan to her face, while the man, with a celestial robe, holds a fish symbolizing good fortune. Four additional carved beads are included on the string, two of which are crafted to resemble chrysanthemums while the second pair is simply ridged. A larger bead has been placed directly equidistant from ends. In fine condition overall.
