Novodel. 23.19 gm. Edge 6. Bit --, Diakov --, Sev --, Uzd --. The major works report only Edge 0 (plain) and Edge 1 (engrailed going right) for this type. Here the obverse and reverse center punches of a Sestroretsk Copper punch have been overstruck on a Novodel of Catherine the Great -- unpublished as such. Only later Novodel Roubles of Catherine the Great have Edge 6. Characteristic evidence of die rust on the obverse. The mintmark -- CÐÁ of the host coin is clear on the bottom ribbon wrap of the reverse wreath, while minor remnants of the host legend are visible on the obverse. Even the listed edges for this coin are noted as R3 by Bitkin and R4 by Diakov. Edge 6 is Excessively rare and with the coin’s other characteristics it is Unique as such. Pleasing old toning.Choice brilliant uncirculatedIn his diary, the infamous early 19th Century collector and numismatic speculator, Grigori Lisenko notes that in 1810 certain Russian mint employees clandestinely struck various mules and fantasies on a medallic press. Among those were plain edge silver strikes from the Sestroretsk copper Rouble punch. These pieces came to be labelled "Pugachev Roubles" because the coin’s name no ruler and the year of the punch used – 1771, coincidentally coincides with the year of the Pugachev Rebellion.
