Sasanian Clay Bulla, ca. 4th-6th Century AD. Terra cotta pottery section imprinted with three signet seals, a lion, a clear inscription (not translated), and a bust facing left. Fingerprints of maker visible. Completely intact. Measures: 6.3 X 2.4 cm.

Bullae in Sasanian society were an interesting way to keep records of important information and give historians a view into Sasanian onomastic when they include personal names, as well as, government and religious positions of people. The seals functioned as a way to guarantee a document came from the correct person as a contract for exchanging goods and services in both administrative and private purposes. Often times when they were used under the auspices of royalty they would bear a bust of that ruler.

Persia/Luristan. Bronze Finial Figure, circa 1000 BC. Depicts a god (Master of Animals) with each arn terminating in a feline with mouth open. Completely intact and free from repair. Mottled dark green and reddish patina. Height: 6".

The iconography of these standard finials remains mysterious though undeniably hypnotic and powerful. Most probably offered as votives to the local gods, they depict scenes from a mythology that has no written history. The central image involves a god/hero who has power over threatening beasts and monsters. These were placed on the top of standards.

Eastern Greco-Roman Bronze Ladle with goat-head terminal. Hellenistic Period 3rd to 2nd Century BC. Greenish-brown patina with encrustation and an ancient repair on edge of ladle which is quite interesting and well done. Height: 9".

Ladles such as this, with a long decorated stem, were used to transfer wine from the amphora to the jug.

A expertly shaped thin rectangular beige/orange flint knife; obverse side, a long uniform concave form, with concave edges; the reverse side uniform convex form with convex edges. Painted Wooden Mummy Mask, Third Intermediate Period, 22nd Dynasty, ca. 945-712 BC. A sensitively sculpted wood mummy mask from the lid of an anthropoid coffin, with areas of gesso and paint. The face has the classic wide white and black eyes, painted with thick black makeup and brownish-red pigment for the skin. He also wears a sort of hat that retains a bit of its original blue pigment. The mask retains six of its original dowels; pleasing expression. Measures: 29 X 22.5 cm.
