Lot 938
1918-D, 8 over 7. PCGS graded MS-64+ PQ. CAC Approved. Boldly struck with lovely russet iridescence on both sides. The surfaces are outstanding and offer strong luster and crisp defintion throughout. The overdate feature is sharp and clear as well, and this was likely an early strike when the dies were quite fresh. Rarely are these important Buffalo nickels found in such superlative condition. It would appear that this coin spent many years housed in an album where it slowly toned and remained so fresh and untouched to earn this lofty grade from PCGS.

Historically America was distracted with World War 1, which took considerable effort to fight. This country joined the fray late in 1917, and the whole mess had ended in late 1918. Thus the news of this time was all about who was winning and why, and what could be done to further the American cause. This incredible ooverdate was created during all this tumult. Someone clearly set it aside and kept it safe and secure for many years, likely completely unaware of the overdate feature or its future value. Today a coin like this is highly valued and exceptionally rare in this condition.

Overdates like this one were created during the die making process, in this case a master hub was used to transfer the entire design to a die with a few blows from the larger coining presses. It must have been late in the year 1917 or early in 1918 when the older 1917 hub was still around. Somehow when making this die both the 1917 and 1918 hubs were impressed into a single die, and this overdate was born. Similar hubbing blunders include the 1909/8 double eagle, 1918/7-S quarter and the 1942/1 dimes. Inspectors would normally catch such a blunder, but obviously a few have made it into production as noted above! These overdates are always popular with collectors, especially when found on the cusp of the gem grade. This is a great coin that should be graded MS-65 or better. Pop 2; 4 finer, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 3939) .

1918-S. PCGS graded MS-64+. A beauty. Superb mark free surfaces and certainly looks like a full blown gem example. The lustrous surfaces exhibit steel blue, violet, and golden highlights that further add to its appeal. A condition rarity even at this level, and downright desirable for its elegant surfaces and strike. The fields and devices are satin smooth and show no interruptions from scuffs and bagmarks of any consequence. Far and away finer than most encountered and a challenging issue to find even close to this grade level. Pop 6; 37 finer (PCGS # 3940) .

1919-S. NGC graded MS-64. Lovely rainbow toning with pastel rose, russet and gold shades particularly on the obverse. The strike is decent with a full horn present on the bison, but somewhat soft near the rims, typical of the San Francisco Mint of this era. Exceptional surface quality and a 1919-S Buffalo is seldom found this nice and rarely any finer. Destined for a high grade collection where toning and quality are demanded. Pop 120; 21 finer.

Lot 944
1920-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Light golden toning on both sides over satin luster. This is the second rarest Bufflao nickel behind only the 1926-S in gem condition. The 1920-S even tops the 1925-S for this honor! To date a scant 20 have been certified by PCGS as MS-65 with a single coin finer! Hence collectors must do battle to obtain one of these gem rarities when they come to market. Demand far exceeds supply for this condition rarity and any collector who demands the best would do well to secure this coin. The strike on this coin is sharper than often seen, but typical of San Francisco in this era the Indian's feathers are not crisp but the bison has a full horn and more definition that often seen. This date is well known for soft strikes! Therefore, if you have been seeking a reasonably well struck, gem example of the 1920-S for your collection, then prepare to bid high to capture this desirable example. Pop 20; 1 finer in 66 (PCGS # 3946) .

1927-S. PCGS graded MS-65. An amazing well struck gem with gorgeous steel blue and iridescent toning mostly on the obverse. A phenomenal coin worthy of a premium bid. This one is right there with the finest seen, only a few dozen gems exist as thee is likely duplication in the Population numbers. This is one of the key dates to find at this grade level of the series, and while not quite as tough as the 1926-S, certainly bears much resemblence to that rarity. A prize for the collector who demands quality, eye appeal and rarity! Pop 30; 3 finer, 2 in 65+, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 3962) .

1937-D. 3 Legs. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A well struck superb gem example sparkling with intensely lustrous surfaces further enhanced by delicate overtones of steel blue and golden iridescence. Worthy of a premium bid and destined for a top Set Registry collection of PCGS coins. None are graded higher and this is one of only 8 seen this well preserved by PCGS.

The richness of the toning is surpassed only by the intensity of the luster! Do not let this one get away if you demand the very finest and most appealing example of this blunder imaginable. It will simply blow away any competition with its amazing quality and eye appeal.

This historic blunder was created under normal coining circumanstances but went a little further than expected. Apparently the feeding mechanism in the coining pres jammed up, causing the planchets to stop flowing into the press. The dies hit each other instead with no blank planchet between them. This caused the reverse die in this case to receive part of the obverse design into its fields. The coiner fixed the jam in the planchet feeding device and took the dies out to see how badly they were clashed. Apparently bad enough to need filing. The coiner that day was new to the job, a Mr. Young according to Breen, and he took an emory stick out and filed off part of the field where the clashmarks were located. In so doing he also removed the foreleg of the bison and weakened other details as well. Citing production quotas inspectors failed to notice and the dies were put back into the press and the 3 Legged Buffalo nickel was born. Only limited quantities were struck, and gems like that are precious and few in number. An outstanding opportunity to secure one of the most popular and desirable mint blunders of the 20th Century and destined for an advanced collection! Pop 8; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 3982) .
Estimated Value $50,000-UP.

1937-D. 3 Legs. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely rich golden toning spans both sides of the lustrous coin. The surfaces are free of all but tiny signs of handling and the bizarre missing leg is noteworthy, with the lonely hoof sitting on the ground and the thigh of beast above, suspended by balance only. Also on the reverse there is a curious stream of raised die dots beneath the belly of the bison, and his rear legs both have a moth eaten appearance as this famous reverse die had significant issues after it was lapped to remove die clashing. These features are always present on the 3 Legs variety and are diagnostic. Boldly struck. Pop 175; 68 finer (PCGS # 3982) .
