Great Britain. Crown, 1700. S.3474; ESC-97; Dav-3782. William III. By James Roettier. Obverse third laureate draped bust right, reverse crowned cruciform shields. Edge DVODECIMO in raised letters. An exceptional mint state specimen which is beautifully toned in shades of golden green and aquamarine. Maintained in pristine condition since the time it was minted. NGC graded MS-63.

*William of Orange was born in November 1650, later married the daughter of James II, Mary Stuart, and was eventually asked by Parliament to govern England, where he suppressed the Jacobites. He ruled jointly with Mary from 1689 until she died from smallpox in 1694.
In 1696 there was a great recoinage and the badly damaged and worn silver coins which made up most of the nation's circulating currency were gradually taken out of circulation and replaced with freshly minted new 'milled' coins. The large new crown pieces were made only in 4 years - 1695, 1696, 1697 and this date 1700. The king died on March 8th 1702, after a serious fall from his horse.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 3115
Great Britain. Crown, 1713. S.3603; ESC-109; Dav-1344; KM-536. Queen Anne, 1702-1714. By John Croker. Third draped bust left, ANNA DEI GRATIA. Reverse; Crowned cruciform shields, roses and plumes in angles. MAG BRI FR ET HIB REG. Edge: ANNO REGNI DVODECIMO in raised letters. This splendid coin is in mint state with a flawless reverse and only a couple of original striations over the obverse portrait, produced (as is often the case with Anne's silver coinage) during the minting process. The steely blue and gold toning is superb and I have never seen a more attractive reverse on a Queen Anne Crown. NGC graded MS-61.

*Anne died on 1st August 1714, a short time after the production of this coin. She had married Prince George of Denmark and the marriage produced 17 children, none of whom survived to claim the throne on the Queen's passing. Anne's coinage is interesting and varied and is notable for the different heraldic designs before and after the important Act of Union with Scotland in 1707. This 1713 Crown is a one year type coin featuring the third bust. All 1713 Crowns are scarce, but exceptionally so in top grades.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Lot 3116
Great Britain. Shilling, 1720. S.3646; ESC-1168; KM-539.2. George I. Angles plain. Attractively and deeply toned mint state. The shillings of George I (except perhaps for the 1723 SSC issue) are rarely now seen in true mint state and even with a current catalogue value of £600 (around $900) in XF (unpriced in Uncirculated) they are pretty certainly underpriced for their rarity. NGC graded MS-63.

Lot 3123
Great Britain. Proof Crown, 1746. S.3690; ESC-126. George II. by John Tanner. Obverse, second, older laureate draped bust left GEORGIVS II DEI GRATIA. Reverse, inverted die axis, crowned cruciform shields, angles plain. Edge VICESIMO in raised letters. Mint state. Obverse has an attractive steel blue tone to complement the razor sharp detail. The reverse is toned in blue with a hint of aquamarine. An exquisite coin which has been cherished over the centuries and consequently remains free from imperfection. A masterpiece of British eighteenth century numismatic production, and much rarer in top grade than the (later) Proof Crowns of 1826 and 1839. NGC graded Proof 63.

* King George II was born in 1683 and raised in Hanover Germany. His father, George I, became King of England after Queen Anne died childless in 1714, and reigned until his demise in 1727. Becoming king in 1727 George II adapted well to life in England and indulged his passions for music, all things military, and his wife Caroline of Ansbach. He was famous as the last English king to have personally lead his troops into battle. George despised his son Frederick and after the death of George II (in 1760) the throne passed to his grandson - later to become George III - as Frederick had already passed away in 1751.
Numismatically, the reign of George II was interesting. Some gold coins were made from bullion supplied by the East India Company and the initials of the company E.I.C appear on the obverse of these pieces. Admiral Anson's seizure of precious metal during his circumnavigation of the globe led to the production of gold and silver coins bearing the word LIMA below the king's portrait. And in 1732 and 1746 two stunning Proof Crowns were produced, one featuring the early (young) bust of the king, and the other (this piece) the older portrait. Copper coins were produced in abundance but none was made after 1754.
Estimated Value $16,000 - 18,000.

Lot 3124
Great Britain. Crown, 1746. S.3689; ESC-125; Dav-1350; KM-585.3. George II, 1727-1760. Attractive mint state with a subtle grey-green tone over an underlying brilliance. Obverse, second, older laureate bust of king by John Tanner. LIMA below in small capital letters, GEORGIVS II DEI GRATIA. Reverse; Crowned cruciform shields, plain in angles. Edge reads ANNO REGNI DECIMO NONO in raised letters. Crisply struck with great eye appeal. NGC graded MS-63 Gold Sticker. WINGS Approved.

* This is one of the great classic British Crown pieces, and silver Crowns were minted infrequently during the king's 33 year reign. Some of the treasure seized by Admiral Anson during his circumnavigation of the globe 1740-1744 was made into coin which had the word LIMA below the king's bust to celebrate the successful taking of precious metal from the Spanish in their New World colonies. This specimen is among the finest of the LIMA Crowns which have survived the nearly 270 year journey to present times.

*This coin was minted 10 years after the US Declaration of Independence. In October 1786 Congress established the United States mint and also in 1786 the Virginia legislature passed Jefferson's Ordinance of Religious Freedom. Meanwhile, King George III was still pondering the loss of his colonies.

Great Britain. Plain Edge Pattern Proof Shilling, 1787. ESC-1241(incorrect on holder). Geroge III. Obverse, richly ornate draped laureate bust of King right by Lewis Pingo, struck en medaille in a collar. GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA, border of dots both sides. Reverse, cruciform shields, crowns in angles, garter star at center. Beautifully toned in shades of deep ocean blue and absolutely mint state. Slight ripple on the flan as is often the case with these extremely rare experimental 18th century Proofs. NGC graded Proof 63.

Lord Effingham, Master of the Mint, authorized Lewis Pingo to make just 168 proofs of the Shillings and Sixpences from the new dies. There had been no currency pieces such as these for nearly 30 years, and the authorities were keen to show the superior quality of the new coinage. The figure includes 100 of each coin for the Directors of the Bank of England.
