Reverse: S P Q R above and below shield inscribed CL V flanked by laurel branches. RIC 36a; cf. BMC 354 (laureate); RSC 51. Attractive toning. Traces of underlying luster. NGC grade Ch AU; Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5. Fine style.

The reverse shows the clipeus virtutis, the shield of valor, decreed to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC. Like the corona civica, it was awarded for saving the life of a fellow citizen.
