Lot 1499
1856-S. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. CAC Approved. Gold Foil Tag. A lovely untoned example that offers radiant luster, the expected sharp strike and excpetional surfaces for the grade assigned. It is worth noting that Type 1 double eagles were virtually unobtainable in MS-63 prior tothe recovery of a few shipwrecks. Naturally not all dates and mints have been found, but for type collectors at last there is a chance to see just how beautiful these coins were at time they were struck--and before they became abraded by jostling about. A beautiful coin with dazzling eye appeal! SSCA 5712. 17Q No Ser, Hi S (PCGS # 8919) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.
Ex: S.S. Central America.

1865. NGC graded MS-64. Boldly struck and untoned. Exceptional preservation for this Philadelphia late Civil War date and unusually nice for a Type I double eagle. A condition rarity at this grade and downright difficult to find appreciably finer. An important offering for the date specialist as these are rarely found so well preserved. This late Civil War issue was mainly used for European trade, and those coins did not survive like this! Impressive collector quality, so don't miss out if you desire mint fresh luster and clean surfaces.Pop 84; 26 finer (PCGS # 8943) .

1865-S. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely shades of light golden toning and particularly attractive for this date and mint. Curiously before the discovery of two shipwrecks that contained this issue, this date was virtually unobtainable in mint state, especially in Choice grades! The strike is sharp and the surfaces are a delight to study, with ample luster and eye appeal throughout. A prize for the astute numismatist to pursue! (PCGS # 8944) .
