Lot 1407
1871-CC. PCGS graded MS-61. Lovely rich golden toning and classically mellowed over years of careful storage. Mint luster still evident and the strike is fairly sharp. Although the mintage of 20,770 pieces makes this Carson City half eagle more available than most dates from this Mint, there are probably no more than 150 around today. Furthermore most of those that do exist come in well circulated grades. There are believed to be only two mint state coins that exist, this one and one slightly finer at MS-62 and also certified by PCGS.

Demand for gold coins was strong back when these were struck, they were in high need for transactions in both banking and commerce. Hence no one thourght to set aside any of these sparkling fresh coins at the time they were available, they were just spent as intended. Today, with lore and history of hte Wild Wst comes alive when any coin from Carson City is examined. Carson City was a bit of a rough and tumble town, filled with silver miners from the Comstock discoveries, and much of the gold and silver mined in that region passed into the Carson City Mint for coinage. It is remarkable that only two of these 1871-CC half eagles exist in Mint State, so for the collector who demands quality and condition rarity, here is a real winner to be pursued. Pictured on the CoinFacts website to repreent this date and mint! Pop 1; 1 finer in 62 (PCGS # 8323) .
Estimated Value $50,000 - 55,000.

1874-CC. PCGS graded AU-53. Nice light shades of gold toning. Only 21,198 struck, which makes this one of the more available issues of the prized 1870 to 1878 Carson City half eagles. This clearly must be understood in its context, as all of the 1870 to 1878 Carson City half eagles are rare. The 1874-CC is just a bit less rare! Only two or so are known that are considered Mint State today, both at the MS-62 level. AU coins are decidedly difficult to obtain and stand well to represent this issue. Notice the sharp strike and clean surfaces when examining this condition rarity, and make sure to bid high if you expect to bring this one home! Pop 7; 26 finer, 17 in 55, 7 in 58, 2 in 62. (PCGS # 8334) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
