National Bank Notes - Large

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1267
Original Series, $2 National Bank Note. The First NB of Warren, RI. Ch. #673. Fine. Fr-387. KL-1093. This nice circulated "Lazy Deuce" is the first example of this denomination to appear from this bank. Unlike most early notes which usually come with the tight "New England trim" that has become synonymous with notes from this region, this example has decent margins and a pleasing appearance overall. This design type is always popular with collectors, and there never seem to be enough to supply the demand.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 1270
1882, $10 National Bank Note. The Delaware City NB, Delaware City, DE, Ch. #1332. Extremely Fine. Fr-481. KL-1187. This is the quintessential Delaware National Bank Note--it has a city name, the bank title, and design type that many collectors desire. It is the only Brown Back $10 known on this bank, and is one of just three of all denominations reported in the census. When it last appeared on the market, 15 years ago in a Lyn Knight sale, it brought $8,800. We expect it to bring more today, with the market for such rarities even more advanced since the turn of the last century.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

Lot 1272
1902, $5 National Bank Note. The First NB of Brawley, CA. Ch. #9673. VG-Fine. Fr-601. KL-1158. This Imperial County town was little more than a "tent city" of 100 inhabitants in 1908, and had reached a population of just 881 people by the 1910 census--the same year that this bank opened and began issuing National Bank Notes. The bank closed in 1922, and most notes that it issued disappeared through redemption. Just four surviving examples are confirmed, including this note which is new to the census. The other three pieces account for the half-dozen auction or fixed price list appearances that have been recorded over the past six decades. The last example to sell was nearly five years ago, and it brought $5,750 in a much weaker market for Nationals. This piece, which is well circulated like all other notes known from here, should easily exceed that amount today.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.
