Lot 1381
Antique Bavarian Faience Lidded Beer Stein Dated 1821. Beautiful Bavarian faience beer stein, lidded in pewter as well as unusual pewter ornamentation down outside of handle and stand. Top of lid bear the intials C.F. and the date 1821. At the time there were thousands of breweries in Bavaria so the demand and diversity of steins swelled enormously. Now these steins are of particular interest to collectors given their craftsmanship, history and charm. In this example, the actual stoneware is free of chips, cracks or crazing. The pewter handle hinge exhibits two hairline cracks when metal lid is opened for examination. The base slightly out of round no doubt from use given its 194 years in age. A nice piece with just two or three very obscure minor scratches within vegetables/floral motif. Stein measures 9" x 7" x 4".
Estimated Value $350 - 600.
