Powder Horn Belonging to Moses Pratt, 1756. Horn inscribed:
MOSES PRATT HIS HORN
SOLGER AT FORT EDWARD IN THE YEAR 1756
TO FORT CUMBERLAND IN THE YEAR

Length: 16 in.
Diameter of base: 3¼ x 3½ in
Four wooden pegs and one iron pen

There is no other decoration aside from the neat lettering which covers one whole side. Spout end has a tip that is turned with two raised rings to make a place for the strap to be secured. This horn is listed on page 29 of Swayze's book as a "diary horn." Fort Cumberland (not to be confused with Fort Cumberland, Maryland) was originally called Fort Beauséjour by the French, who constructed it in 1751. It was the most northeast of the French forts and was built to protect their interests in present-day Nova Scotia from the British, who had built nearby Fort Lawrence in 1750. In 1755, British regulars and New England militia captured Fort Beauséjour and renamed it Fort Cumberland. In 1759 Col. Joseph Fry's Regiment of Massachusetts provincials occupied Fort Cumberland. It is possible that Moses Pratt was in his command. It is rare to have a horn inscribed from the Fort Cumberland which was originally Fort Beauséjour. Ref: Powder Horns. Documents of History by Tom Grinslade, p. 21.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
