Lot 353
Pershing, John J. Typed letter signed, 1 page, on General of the Armies letterhead, 9¾ x 7 in., Washington, Sept. 11, 1921. Light soiling. To John Jones in Troy, New York, regarding an incident that happened at a Lafayette-Marne dinner commemorating Franco-American ties. "Your letter, which is only one of a great many, indicates that the consensus of opinion in the country is decidedly against the claims of this old pompous, boasting, foreign leader of American labor. It is time the average citizen should stand up for the rights of all real Americans." Pershing refers to Samuel Gompers (1850-1924) an English-born American labor union leader and a key figure in American labor history. Gompers had spoken at the dinner, praising those who had won the war on the battlefields of France and in the workshops of the United States. Pershing, who spoke after Gompers, excoriated him for claiming that labor had been loyal and had anything to do with winning the war.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
