Lot 1289
1854-O. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely light blue toning at the rims, dusky silver-gray to the centers. The strike is bold throughout and this is a short-lived type coin as well with the Arrows at the date, these signifying the reduction in the silver content of the planchets used starting in early 1853, as the value of the silver had risen to a point that a profit could be made from melting down old tenor silver coins (from the first month or so of 1853 and prior--without the Arrows at the date). Many of these earlier coins did not survive this era as they were melted for the profit. This glorious gem did and stands tall as one of the most technically outstanding coins of this date and mint. Add in the attractive toning and bold strike, and you have a coin worthy of a record bid. Pop 11; 3 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67. (PCGS # 6280) .

Lot 1290
1854-O. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely toning and boldly struck. While these are desirable features they fail to capture the essence of this condition rarity. While the New Orleans Mint stuggled to keep up with the demand for half dollars that year, most of those produced entered circulation and stayed there. Here is one that did not, but was set aside and carefully preserved. Notice the fields, the devices, even the rims, all are in nearly perfect order with no distracting nicks or cuts. The Arrows signify a reduction in the silver content of the planchets, done in order to bring the half dollar coins back below their melt bullion value, a by product of the Gold Rush in California which caused the value of silver to rise while the abundant gold price comparatively dropped. Old tenor coinage of early 1853 (without arrows) had generally been melted for the profit to be gained, and businesses struggled to find coins to make proper change. Pop 11; 3 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67. (PCGS # 6280) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

Lot 1291
1857. PCGS graded MS-65. Light golden toning. A scarce date when found in the gem grade or finer, and this example has good eye appeal. The strike is average with a few stars lacking their centers, but the drapery lines on Liberty and the eagle's feathers are well defined. The fields and devices are satin smooth and close scrutiny finds little more than just traces of contact. Pop 5; 4 finer, 2 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 6290) .

1859. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning with deeper blue peripheral accents. The fields and devices are all but free of any signs of contact and the eye appeal is exceptional for this early proof date. 1873-CC. No Arrows. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Lovely light even lavender toning ovdr lustrous fields. The strike is bold too, with no distracting softness on the devices. This is a key date with a mintage of only 122,500 pieces--which is about half as many as the Arrows issue of this date and mint. Coming from the famed Carson City Mint keeps demand high when one of these appears on the market, and most collectors hope to obtain an example in Very Fine or so, with only the most advanced seeking an incredbile mint state coin like this offering. Well struck. Pop 3; 7 finer (PCGS # 6338) .
