Seated Liberty Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1190
1838. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty white gem. This is the first year the Gobrecht design was launched on the quarter dollar denomination, in fact the old style Capped Bust design was used for several months of 1838 while this new design was being made ready for production. Here is a glorious gem that offers satin luster throughout and a solid strike. The surfaces are free of distracting marks, and close examination finds little more than a couple of shallow ticks in the fields. Scarce and wholesome. Pop 5; 5 finer, 3 in 66, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 19,000.

Lot 1191
1838. No Drapery. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice light toning on both sides. This is the first year of issue of the Liberty Seated quarter dollar, and these were struck soon after the last of the 1838 Capped Bust quarters were coined. While obtainable with patience at this grade level, finer examples are generally prohibitive for most collectors due to their rarity and the premiums they command. Here is one that offers strong visual appeal and excellent surfaces. Pop 24; 9 finer, 2 in 64+, 3 in 65, 3 in 66, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 5391) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Lot 1193
1850. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin. Notice the extra base of the 1 from the date on the rim below the primary date, a well known and highly collectible blunder seen on some 1850 quarters. This adds to the appeal of this scarce issue, a coin which is seldom found at the Choice or finer grade level. Pop 3; 2 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5415) .

1856. PCGS graded Proof 65. Boldly struck with nice rainbow toning that darkens at the periphery, brighter at the centers. The reverse die suffered a minor injury that extends up and below from the right wing of the eagle, below AM of AMERICA. All proofs of this date exhibit this feature, which was carefully polished out leaving the field somewhat uneven. This particular coin is the main example posted on CoinFacts for this date. An extremely rare early Proof issue. Only 30 examples were believed struck, possibly a few more. Pop 3; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5552) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. Light even gold toning. A rare early proof that is seldom offered at all, and this is one of the finer examples known today. The fields are highly reflective and the surrounding devices show the expected mint frost. A rare and desirable format for this early proof Liberty Seated quarter dollar. Only 30 struck. Pop 8; 3 finer in 65. (PCGS # 5552) .

1857. NGC graded MS-67. Lovely rainbow toning of deep russet and blue surrounds the rims while the centers are brighter and more vibrant with luster. Close examination fails to note more than a few trivial luster grazes, and the fields and devices are of outstanding quality. Notice too the strength of the strike, which defines every nuance of the obverse and reverse designs, right down to the talons on the eagle. Incredible quality like this will always be sought-after, especially on early coins of this pre-Civil War era. Pop 18; 5 finer, 2 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+, 1 in 68, 1 in 68 Star.

1865. NGC graded Proof 67. Lovely rainbow toning of blazing bright orange-russet and teal on the obverse, more blue and silver-gray on the reverse. Essentially perfect in terms of preservation, with no distracting lines or nicks, and elegant color which adds greatly to the overall appeal. A condition rarity at the superb grade, and virtually unobtainable finer. Only 500 struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 68.

1867. PCGS graded MS-64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Nice golden toning that deepens to russet around the obverse rim, a bit lighter and more even on the reverse. The strike is bold throughout, and this example is tied for the finest certified by PCGS. The mintage was only 20,000 pieces, and collectors have a real challenge to find this date in any mint state grade, and high grade circulated examples are also difficult to secure. An important offering for the Liberty Seated quarter collctor. Pop 3; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 5470) .
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

1871. PCGS graded MS-65. Untoned and frosty. Although the mintage climbed to 118,200 pieces for the year, the highest Liberty Seated quarter production since the Civil War ended, not many were saved, and today collectors wait for just the right coin to appear before securing this date for their collections. Tied with a couple of others as the third finest seen by PCGS, which properly records the rarity of this date and mint in Gem condition. Don't miss out if you have been seeking a splendid, appealing example. Pop 3; 2 finer, 1 in 67+, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 5478) .

1874. Arrows. NGC graded Proof 66. Incredible rich aqua-blue and central russet-gold toning graces both the obverse and reverse. The reflective mirror fields show virtual perfection in terms of handling as there are no distracting marks. Furthermore the frosted devices are also well preserved in order to be awarded such a lofty grade from NGC, and as such this is one of the finer examples known of this popular type and date issue. Only 700 struck. Pop 26; 6 finer, 5 in 67, 1 in 68 Star.

Lot 1207
1874. Arrows. NGC graded Proof 65. Lovely blue and purple toning which is absolutely resplendent when examined. The Arrows were added to quarters in early 1873 to signify a minor adjustment to the planchet weight, and the Arrows were removed from future dies starting in 1875. Thus a short-lived two year type coin was created for collectors with the Arrows flanking the date. Furthermore, at the Gem grade level, precious few survive and collector demand for a coin like this will always be strong, especially given its colorful toning over Gem reflective surfaces. Only 700 struck. Pop 40; 32 finer, 26 in 66, 5 in 67, 1 in 68 Star.

1885. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo. Fully white and boldly struck. While the Superb quality of the surfaces is already memorable and one of the finest seen of this scarce Proof issue, it is the Ultra Cameo contrast which propels this coin into the extraordinary category. Only a few examples of these early Proofs offer such strong contrast of the devices against the reflective fields. A low-mintage issue for both business strikes and proofs, 5,000 of the former, 886 of the latter. Pop 6; 1 finer in 68. (PCGS # 95587) .
