Draped Bust Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1097
1800. LM-3, LIBEKTY. PCGS graded AU-53. Mostly untoned. An elusive and popular major die variety, with the R in LIBERTY broken and appearing to be instead the letter K, this caused by a chip off the top of the letter punch used to engrave the die. Most of the 1800 half dimes seen are of the plain LIBERTY variety, with this much scarcer variety appearing about one out of five offerings of this date. High grade examples like this are especially sought after. Further evidence for the scarcity of this issue is seen in that the obverse die cracked to the left of he date (seen here) and the reverse die failed by sinking near the center, minimizing detail on coins struck, just below the eagle's beak down into the shield. Coinage of the LIBERKY variety undoubtedly stopped soon after the present example was struck. A rare and desirable example for the numismatist. Only 40,000 struck for the year. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 55, 1 in 58, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 38603) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Lot 1099
1801. LM-2. NGC graded MS-61. Lovely light golden toning. This is a true condition rarity as only a few examples of 1801 half dimes have been certified as Mint State. This particular coin is a later die state with the arcing die crack up through the date, behind Liberty's head and out through the B of LIBERTY. Identifiable by a minor planchet streak in the shield on the reverse. A boldly struck and carefully preserved coin that will attract considerable attention from any specialist who is searching for a high grade 1801 half dime. Only 27,760 Struck. Pop 3; 1 finer in 63 for the variety.
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.
