Ti. Veturius. Silver Denarius (4.01 g), ca. 137 BC. Rome. Helmeted and draped bust of Mars right; behind, TI VET (VET ligate) and denomination. Reverse: Youth kneeling left head right, holding a pig; flanked by a soldier on either side, who each hold a spear and touch the pig with their sword; above, ROMA. RSC Veturia 1; Crawford 234/1; Sydenham 527. Lustrous and delicately toned. Superb Nearly Mint State.

The Veturii were one of the most ancient gens of Rome, with both patricians and plebians sects, they were said to originate from the Sabines. The reverse refers to the involvement and oath ancestors of this gens took to join the Italian states at the end of the third Samnite War, in ca. 290 BC.

Sextus Pompey (son of Pompey the Great), Silver Denarius (4 g), 42-38 BC. Massilia, executed 35 BC, under the commander of the fleet, Q. Nasidius. NEPTVNI behind, bare head of Pompey the Great facing right, trident before, dolphin right below. Reverse: Q NASIDIVS in exergue, galley with billowing sail and bank of rowers moving right; in upper left field, star. Crawford 483/2; HCRI 235; Sydenham 1350; RSC Pompey the Great 20. Delicately toned with traces of luster. A fantastic portrait of Pompey. Extremely Fine.

Q. Nasidius was a Pompeian loyalist, having first served under Pompey unsuccessfully defending Massalia from the Caesarian forces under Decimus Brutus in 49 BC. Later he commanded the fleet of the Pompeian forces in north Africa until the disaster at Thapsus, after which he left for Spain to join with Pompey's son, Cn. Pompey Jr. He subsequently served as supreme naval commander under Sextus Pompey at Massilia, where this handsome coin was struck. Eventually Nasidius saw the futility of the Pompeian cause, deserting to Mark Antony where he fought at Actium in 31 BC.
