Unsold
Lot 1685
1832. PCGS graded AU-55. Untoned with reflective fields. Only 4,400 struck, with about 80 to 120 examples estimated to have survived. Most of those known are lightly circulated as seen on the present example. Virtually the entire mintage of quarter and half eagles struck prior to the planchet weight change in 1834 were melted, if they were available in circulation in the late 1820s and early 1830s, as the price of gold rose to the point that these were worth more than face value. Today survivors are sparse and scattered with collectors only able to secure one now and then, regardless of price. An important type or date representative that will satisfy just the lucky buyer who secures it at the auction. Pop 10; 23 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7672) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.
