"1815" Electrotype Copy Turban Head Cent VF20. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate blending to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. Sharpness is about 10 points better but there are a few patches of minor roughness and some of the underlying base metal shows through on both sides. This electrotype copy was made from an 1813 S-292 that had the date expertly reengraved to 1815, and the "5" is perfectly done. Perhaps that's why someone decided to use this "1815" cent as a model for electrotype copies. Estimated Value $400-UP. Ex Tom Reynolds 11/6/2010-William R. Eckberg. View details and enlarged photos

M-LDS with a rim cud from star 8 to star 11 and a die crack through the top of NITED to the dentils near the adjacent S. Estimated Value $100-UP. M-LDS with a rim cud break from star 8 to star 11 and an additional smaller rim cud break between stars 11 & 12. The repunching on the 1 is still clear and the reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW. 1817 N-9 R2 Reverse Brockage VG8. Slightly sharper, particularly on the incuse (brockage) side, but there is a dull scrape in the leaves under the A in STATES on the "normal" side. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker steel and olive brown toning in protected areas. The brockage (incuse) side is bold and evenly impressed, and it is aligned perfectly with the normal impression. Both sides are very slightly off center to the top. EDS. The crack at OF AMERICA is light and the dentils are crisp. The die crack allows one to determine the year and variety, and the crisp dentils indicate this piece was struck when the reverse die was relatively new. A bold, very impressive mint error that was produced when a struck cent failed to eject from the coining chamber before a second planchet was inserted and struck by the reverse (hammer) die on one side and by the reverse of the previously struck cent on the other side. Estimated Value $1,000-UP. Ex Jim McGuigan-R. Tettenhorst, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/19/2010:441-William R. Eckberg (lot ticket included). View details and enlarged photos

1817 N-12 R3 NGC graded MS61 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate mixed with puffs of darker olive brown. Peeps of faded mint red show in a few of the protected areas on both sides. A small spot of darker reddish chocolate toning on the left base of the N in ONE is a good identifying mark. There is a light touch of friction on the highest points but to the unaided eye this cent looks very nice. However, a glass reveals some light scraping on the die crack that connects the digits of the date with stars 1 and 13. This wouldn't show except that the scraping left lighter coppery tan toning on the raised crack. Obviously someone thought the crack was a defect and attempted to "improve" the coin. Regardless, it's still a very nice example of a variety that is very difficult to locate in grades above VF. MDS. The die crack through the date is wide and an earlier die crack through star 1 now bends to reach the dentils below. Our grade is AU50 sharpness net EF40. Estimated Value $2,000-UP. 1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse. PCGS graded EF-45. Glossy chocolate and steel brown very delicately mottled with some lighter brown tones. Frosty flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas. No roughness and the only marks are microscopic with none notable. A tiny planchet chip on the rim under the 7 in the date is the best identifying defect. E-MDS. The rim cud break usually present above AM has not formed and the reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees CCW (which normally wouldn’t be important except for the fact that this variety comes with many different reverse rotations). A nice example of this popular variety. Our grade is EF40. PCGS population 1; 9 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 36598) . Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
