Lot 2021
1867-S. NGC graded VF-35. A notably circulated example with a generally untoned appearance and a few small bagmarks on both sides. Despite a mintage of 9,000 pieces, this date is much scarcer than its Philadelphia brother of the same year. Surviving examples typically show extensive wear and no Mint State coins have yet been graded at either of the major services (PCGS # 8652) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,250.

Lot 2022
1868. PCGS graded AU-58. Nice straw-gold color with some subtle red at certain peripheral areas with indirect lighting. 1868 is considered a rare date with only 10,630 pieces minted. Abundant detail remains despite a short stint in circulation. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The 1868 has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced from 1866-1873, but do not be deceived into thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the Choice AU range. In fact, only a single Uncirculated example has been graded by PCGS (MS62) with only 15 AU-58 examples. One thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a high grade example of a very difficult year and time frame. Identified by a scuff in the field near stars 2 and 3, another over the top of Liberty's head, as well as several chatter marks on the reverse. Pop 15; 1 finer in 62. (PCGS # 8653) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1870-S. NGC graded AU Details, Improperly Cleaned. The eagles struck at San Francisco in 1870 circulated widely, this despite a very limited mintage of just 8,000 pieces. The result is that the issue is very scarce in today's market. This AU specimen features surfaces that have been cleaned at one time. As a result, one can see myriad hairlines and a somewhat dull finish. The overall definition remains suitably bold despite the presence of light wear, and none of the scattered abrasions are worthy of individual attention (PCGS # 8659) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

Lot 2024
1872-CC. PCGS graded AU-50. Comparatively clean surfaces with a deep honey-gold appearance. Some typical scattered ticks are seen with the unaided eye, but nothing overly detracting is noted. From a very small mintage of just 4,600 pieces, every known survivor from that mintage has circulated to some degree. The vast majority of known examples are VF to XF, with true AU specimens few and far between. In fact, this date is seldom offered in any grade -- perhaps only 70 to 80 pieces can be accounted for today. Those who specialize in Liberty eagles or Carson City gold will be very pleased to know this high-grade specimen is currently in the auction marketplace. Notably, neither NGC nor PCGS has graded a single Mint State example of the 1872-CC eagle. Pop 7; 9 finer, 2 in 53, 3 in 55, 4 in 58. (PCGS # 8664) .

1880. PCGS graded MS-63. The 1880 ten dollar has a relatively high mintage, and is often available in AU-58 to MS-62 grades, many of these being heavily abraded, however, this issue is quite scarce at the MS-63 level. This Select example is crisply struck and exhibits bright orange-gold mint luster. A lateral mark on Liberty's cheek limits the grade.Pop 62; 21 finer, 1 in 63+, 18 in 64, 2 in 64+.

1881-CC. PCGS graded AU-53. The attractive orange-gold surfaces exhibit traces of mint bloom in the protected areas. Deeper orange color is seen at the centers of each side, particularly the reverse. This nicely struck eagle is evenly circulated and lightly abraded, as is typical of CC coins of this era. From a modest mintage of 24,015 pieces, most of which circulated for some length of time in the Western United States. A pleasing, original appearing specimen Housed in an Old Green Holder. 1887-S. PCGS graded MS-64. The MS-64 level of preservation is uncommonly high for a survivor of this 817,000-piece S-mint mintage as most survivors remain in MS-63 and lower grades, most likely no higher than MS-62. This lot offers original antique-gold overtones with subtle green-gold color at the peripheries on each side. Fully struck throughout with just a few tiny marks on the reverse, all typical of the Choice assigned grade. A rare opportunity for collectors. Pop 5; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 8711) .

1889-S. PCGS graded MS-64+. CAC Approved. Although the 1889-S ten dollar is available in bagmarked Uncirculated grades, MS-60 to MS-63, near-Gems such as this coin are important condition rarities. The surfaces are brilliant and highly lustrous, with all the design features showing bold definition. A couple of wispy marks and scuffs are noted on each side, however, these are barely visible without magnification and do not overly detract from the coin's appealing appearance. Pop 1; 1 finer in 65+. (PCGS # 8716) .

Frosty honey-gold motifs and deeply mirrored fields display a glittering, bright appearance overall A fully defined and very attractive Choice Proof with only a couple of tiny ticks visible with magnification, these serving to limit the grade. Just 55 proofs were struck, with somewhere around 20 pieces surviving today, most of which are not as nice as this example which is among the 10 finest examples certified by NGC (some of which likely represent resubmissions). 1899. NGC graded MS-64+. CAC Approved. The 1899 ten is easily located in grades of MS-62 and lower, but its availability dramatically declines in each succeeding higher grade. The date becomes rare at the Choice level, and finer coins are exceedingly rare. Shimmering orange-golden mint luster engulfs each side in frosty radiance, and the design elements are razor-sharp. The eye appeal is certainly deserving of a Gem grade designation (PCGS # 8742) .

1906. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo. Being a large-sized coin, the $10 gold pieces bear plenty of blank field spaces that won't allow any mark to hide, and the ultra reflective surfaces of these Liberty gold proof strikes may signalize any flaw. However, this coin shows straightforward smoothness, which is so close to perfection, that any examiner wouldn't expect before seeing it. The cataloger's opinion is proved by the top pop for this coin, which is simply the finest piece ever graded by any grading services. The light handling traces on the bust would be the only reason that stopped this coin from being graded even higher. Only 77 examples were struck. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. The only example graded as deep cameo by PCGS. Tied for the finest example graded at both services. (PCGS # 98846) .
