Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 216
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. VG7. Very slightly sharper but the fields and protected areas are covered with extremely faint granularity that's mostly hidden under attractive partly glossy medium chocolate brown toning. No verdigris, only very light contact marks. The notable ones are a small rim bruise under the 9 in the date, another on the rim opposite the nose, some barely visible hairline scratches hidden in the toning on the reverse, and a series of tiny rim nicks at NITED. MDS, Breen state II. Shallow swelling weakens the bottom of the 1 in the date and the top of the U in UNITED, but there is no crack at TAT in STATES. The date is easily readable although the lower part of the 1 & 9 are gone. The legends are complete and clear. A decent example of our Mint's first large cent.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

Lot 217
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. G4. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate. Microscopic roughness covers the fields and protected areas while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris or contact marks. The obverse is weaker than the reverse, as usual for Chain Cents. The date is very faint, essentially gone, but most of LIBERTY is easily readable and the legends on the reverse are complete, although CENT and OF AMERI are weak. MDS with swelling at the top of the U in UNITED. Decent for a low grade Chain AMERI.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

Lot 218
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS graded Fair-2. Glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. No roughness, verdigris, or planchet defects, just heavily worn. The only marks are some trivial nicks, mostly on the rims. A rim nick just right of the Y in LIBERTY is the best identifying mark, and it is insignificant otherwise. The date is very faint but all 4 digits can be seen if you angle the coin just right in a good light. Most of LIBERTY is visible. The devices and legends on the reverse are weak as well, but AMERI and the period that follows can be made out. The chain is complete. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. If there can be such a thing as a choice Fair-2 Chain AMERI., this is it (PCGS # 1340) .
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

Lot 219
1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. Basal State-1. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. No roughness, essentially just heavily worn except for a script "G" that is neatly engraved into the center of the obverse. Otherwise there are just a few small, shallow planchet voids on the reverse and a few minor contact marks on both sides. LIBER remains visible and the portrait is mostly visible although faint. At least half of the chain remains visible and STATES is complete, which is fortunate since that's where a strong cud break connects TAT to the rim. An extremely rare terminal die state, Breen state VI, for our first large cent. The failure of this reverse die resulted in the introduction of the Chain AMERICA style reverse for all the Chain Cents that followed.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA Fair-2. Very slightly glossy chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are covered with fine granularity but there is no verdigris. The only marks are a few very shallow pits along the rim behind the portrait. The date is faint but readable when the coin is tilted just right in the light. LIBERTY and most of the legend on the reverse are weak but readable. The chain, ONE CENT, and the fraction are more easily readable, which is normal for the wear pattern on Chain Cents.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Lot 224
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large Date & LIBERTY Basal State-1. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Slightly sharper but there is an attempted hole at the top of the head and evidence of a hammer blow across the forehead. Perhaps someone was attempting to hammer a nail through the cent and attach it above the entrance to their home (which was popular at one time). Glossy medium chocolate brown. Most of LIBERTY and the portrait remain visible, and the leaves over the date are clear, but most of the reverse legends are gone. Fortunately there is more than enough remaining to make a positive attribution.

Lot 225
1793 S-5 R4 Wreath Cent with Large Date & LIBERTY Basal State-1 Counterstamped. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Not much of the designs remain visible but the leaves over the date and parts of the top of the head and LIBERTY are present (although weak), and a few elements on the reverse can be made out with some effort. Portions of the Vine & Bars Edge device remain visible as well. Fortunately enough remains to make a positive attribution. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. There is what appears to be a deep planchet void where the left half of the date should be. This piece was counterstamped J.STAPLETON across the obverse and "1858" was carefully hand-engraved above the counterstamp. This piece is shown in the Brunk reference as S-862, and it appears to be the same piece Brunk used to make the listing.

1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent Basal State-1. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Mostly smooth and glossy chocolate and steel brown, but this piece is heavily worn and it has a large "X" deeply scratched into the obverse. The portrait and leaves below are clear but the majority of LIBERTY is worn away and the date is gone. Most of UNITED STATES is readable but the remainder of the reverse is faint or worn smooth. A beveled planchet clip shows at K-5 on the reverse. Not pretty but it is a Wreath Cent.

1793 S-8 R3 Wreath Cent VF35. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Five points sharper but there are a few minor contact marks on otherwise choice, very attractive surfaces. The notable marks are rim nick over the Y in LIBERTY, another dull rim nick over the R in AMERICA, and a smaller rim nick right of the F in OF. The surfaces are smooth, completely void of corrosion or verdigris, with only trivial ticks and tiny pre-striking planchet chips. Choice glossy chocolate brown. MDS, Breen state II. The diagonal die crack and associated swelling on the reverse are clear but the fine die cracks at the top of the obverse that are associated with the late state have not formed. A beautiful 1793 Wreath Cent. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU50BN (NGC label #1745247-002 included).
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.

1793 S-9 R2 Wreath Cent. PCGS graded EF-40. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Sharply struck and nicely centered on a flawless planchet. The only defects are minor contact marks scattered over the obverse, none notable. The best identifying marks are two tiny pinpricks just left of the O in ONE, but it takes a good glass to see them. MDS, Breen state VI, with a die crack from the dentils through CA and the stem to the ribbon and another from the fraction bar through the tip of the ribbon to the U in UNITED. A very nice Wreath Cent that offers excellent eye appeal. Our grade is VF30.

1793 S-10 R4 Wreath Cent Fair-2. Variety with a Vine & Bars Edge. Clipped Planchet. Sharpness at least G6 on the obverse but the planchet is covered with light to moderate corrosion mixed with planchet striations, strongest on the reverse. Slightly glossy medium chocolate brown blending to darker chocolate on the reverse. There are a few light scratches hidden in the roughness but no verdigris. The 179 in the date is clear but the 3 is quite faint. Later die state with obvious die failure at the dentils before the face. The major feature of this cent is a rather large curved planchet clip behind the lower half of the portrait, as struck. Major planchet clips are rarely seen on 1793 cents.

1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS Genuine Devices Engraved. Variety with a single leaf following DOLLAR on the edge lettering. The obverse is glossy light chocolate brown while the reverse is a darker shade of chocolate with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. All the devices on the obverse have been reengraved to strengthen them while the reverse remains untouched. The obverse offers high-end VF details thanks to the engraving, but the work does not display a lot of expertise. The reverse sharpness is near VF20 but there are areas of pitting on the left side, mostly around UNITED STATE. It is difficult to settle on a grade for this cent; let's say F12 sharpness net G5. But it is a genuine Lettered Edge Wreath Cent with lots of detail.

1793 S-11 R3 Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS Genuine, VG Details Environmental Damage. Sharpness G6 or a bit better but there are deep planchet striations covering most of the obverse and the reverse is moderately rough from a mix of striations and corrosion. The date is only partially visible and those parts are faint, but the leaves, portrait, and LIBERTY remain visible. At least half of the reverse remains visible as well. Steel and medium chocolate brown mixed with darker steel on the reverse. Portions of the Lettered Edge are visible in the slab, but the number of leaves following DOLLAR can not be determined. Our grade is G6+ sharpness net AG3. The Lettered Edge feature is noted on the PCGS label.

Lot 238
1793 "Smith Counterfeit" F12. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with smooth, defect-free surfaces that offer excellent eye appeal. This example appears to have been made from a worn 1793 S-8 cent, but the engraver was so skilled it is difficult to be certain of the date of the host coin. At the very least the layout of the designs is close to those of the S-8 dies (the Crosby 9-G dies), and the edge has the normal Vine & Bars device found on most Wreath Cents. Both sides were extensively reworked, not just the obverse as often found on these pieces. The weight is only 157.1 grains versus the standard of 208.0 which indicates a significant amount of metal was removed in the engraving process. This piece is far more attractive than the Smith Counterfeit in the fabulous Dan Holmes Collection (our sale 9/6/2009:21) that brought $3335.
