Lot 158
1809 C-1 R7+ (as a die state) AG3. A couple points sharper but covered with light to moderate roughness on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No verdigris. The only mark is a dull dent in the center of the obverse that caused a faint bulge in the center of the reverse over EN in CENT. The date is strong and the legends are complete except for UNITED, which is mostly worn away or lost in the roughness. The highpoints are glossy light steel brown and tan while the protected areas are a darker shade of olive brown and chocolate. Extremely rare late die state, Manley state 3.0, with a strong cud break connecting MERI to the rim. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW. One of only 4 or 5 examples known with the cud break and a major die state that was missing in the fabulous Missouri Cabinet Collection, the only complete collection of half cents by die variety ever formed. A very important piece for the specialist.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1809 C-2 R3 EF45. Sharpness near mint state but there is a thin planchet fissure (as struck) from the lips through star 3 to the dentils, a microscopic planchet crack at the opposing area over the first S in STATES (also as struck), and a tiny patch of microscopic corrosion over the left top of the L in HALF. Glossy mix of medium chocolate, darker olive brown, and reddish chocolate brown. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a die crack through the stars on the right side of the obverse.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Lot 160
1809 C-2 R3 VF25. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but there is a vertical scratch in the field behind the portrait and a lighter scratch on the portrait from the hair above the T in LIBERTY to the chin and slightly beyond into the field. Both scratches are old and blend perfectly into the attractive glossy medium chocolate brown toning. LDS, Manley state 4.0, with die cracks through the stars on both sides of the portrait. This piece has a larger than normal diameter, 24.0 millimeters, and the dentils are weakly struck around both sides giving it the appearance of a broadstruck error. This appearance can also result when the planchet is not properly upset (a process that raises the rims, Breen's stage II of the planchet preparation process) before striking. An interesting half cent.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1809 C-4 R2 Large 0 over Small 0. ANACS graded VF-35. Glossy olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints. Excellent eye appeal, but there are a few minor marks. The notable ones are a shallow planchet flake at the dentils above the back of the head (as struck) and some tiny nicks on the reverse at the E & C in AMERICA. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The small 0 inside the normal 0 in the date is sharp (the die-cutter began with the wrong punch, then recovered). Our grade is VF30+ sharpness net VF25+, close to VF30. The attribution is shown on the ANACS label.

1810 C-1 R1. PCGS graded AU-50. Choice frosty medium chocolate brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints and lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. There is very little actual wear on this half cent but the dies were well worn when this piece was struck. The only marks are a nick on the end of the nose and a smaller one on the cheek to the right. LDS with the reverse rotated 50 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. A nice piece that offers excellent eye appeal. Our grade is EF45.

1811 C-1 R6 (with the 4-Star Cud) VF20. Sharpness VF35 but there are numerous fine scratches on the obverse, mostly on the portrait, a rim nick under star 11, and shallow scrapes around HALF CENT. The toning is an attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and the naked-eye appeal of this piece is excellent. Rare TDS, Manley state 5.0, with a large, strong cud break connecting stars 1-4 to the rim. The opposing area at TED-S is depressed and weak thanks to the cud, as always in this die state. There was not enough planchet metal to fill out the designs opposite the deep cud.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1811 C-1 R7 (as a die state) AG3. Several points sharper with many small pits on the obverse, a dull dent on the rim below star 13, and a slightly bent planchet. No verdigris. Cleaned bright with dark steel and olive toning remaining in the protected areas. The date is strong and the legends are complete. Not the most attractive half cent to be sure, but it is in the extremely rare M-LDS, Manley state 4.0, with a bold cud break connecting stars 1 & 2 to the rim. About 7 examples are known with the 2-star cud break, and none of those is in high grade. This is the Missouri Cabinet example of the die state. A very significant die state for the specialist.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1811 C-2 R3 VF25+. Attractive glossy medium chocolate and olive brown. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent. Very close to VF30. The only marks are a small spot of darker toning in the field right of star 4 and a shallow rim bruise over the M in AMERICA. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with clear die clashmarks between the last 1 in the date and the curls above. A bit softly struck on the left edges of both sides, as always on this variety, thanks to non-parallel die faces. A very nice example of this tough date.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

Lot 173
1811 C-2 R3. PCGS graded VF-20. Dull steel and olive brown. Both sides display a layer of oxidation that dulls the natural gloss and adversely affects the eye appeal of an otherwise smooth half cent. No roughness or verdigris, and the only mark is a long, dull nick from the bust tip to star 1. I suspect this piece was cleaned long ago and allowed to retone naturally. Regardless it needs a proper brushing to bring the surfaces back to life. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with die clashmarks behind the head. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Our grade is net VG8, perhaps a bit better if properly brushed.

1825 C-1 R3. ANACS graded EF-40. Rotated Reverse. Slightly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate fading to chocolate brown in protected areas. Smooth and attractive, essentially flawless except for some minor dirt. A tiny hairline scratch under the 5 in the date is the only notable mark, and it is trivial. Sharply struck MDS, Manley state 2.0. The vertical crack from the dentils through the head to the curl on the neck is clear and the reverse is rotated 155 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is VF25. 1825 C-2 R1. PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The notable marks are a small nick in the middle of the jawline and a subtle splash of slightly darker toning at ATE in STATES. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The end of the wreath stem is sharp, a die state called "very scarce" by Manley. In addition there is a strong vertical bar on the edge between stars 10 & 11, and this bar may have been caused by a break or notch in the restraining collar in the press. This half cent was graded MS60+ by Roger Cohen. Our grade is AU50+, close to AU55. Noyes photo #74355.

1831 Proof Original Breen 1-A R7- (as a proof). PCGS graded Proof 62 Red & Brown. Reddish tan and brown fading to darker bluish steel in protected areas. Ample faded red shows on both sides, probably from a very old cleaning. The fields are nicely reflective but they do show myriad fine hairlines. Very sharply struck. The best identifying marks are a scuff on the leaf tip left of the H in HALF and a tiny boomerang-shaped struck-through line above IC in AMERICA (as struck). The "Accessory E" in the wreath under the E in STATES is bold. Less than a dozen proof strikes are known of these originals plus about 20 circulated pieces that are commonly thought to be business strikes (but that is debatable as some feel all were proof strikes). Our grade is Proof-60. The PCGS label indicates this is a Proof Original strike and mentions the Carvin Goodridge provenance.
