Lot 1467
1916-S. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Attractive purple, gold, and russet toning has accumulated at the rims on both sides, the centers are essentially brilliant. The surfaces present a highly lustrous appearance under the obviously original and appealing toning. Struck with preciseness only now and then found on a 1916-S, the first year of issue and by all measures the scarcest branch mint this year.

Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, highly regarded today, evoked mixed reactions when it made its debut. "At last we have on our coins the great American eagle in a natural, lifelike form," The Numismatist said. "As represented on the half dollar he is, as the small boy would say, 'some bird,' and his size and proportions are in keeping with the greatness and power of the country." However, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman chided, "The artist has made this bird a terrestrial fowl, striding or marching on the ground like a turkey- cock, and with as much dignity as one." Another critic said, "The eagle looks as though it were wearing overalls and marching through hot tar." Still another said, "Liberty in sandals taking giant strides across its face might burn her toes if she should step one millimeter nearer the rising sun." Pop 95; 15 finer, 1 in 65+, 13 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6568) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Lot 1470
1917-S. Mintmark on Reverse. PCGS graded MS-65. The adopted dies for Weinman's Walking Liberty series were in some ways inferior to their pattern predecessors. This is because many of the production coins are weakly struck on Liberty's cap, facial details, and often the branch hand is blurred, as are the striations representing red stripes on the flag, many stars, and most of eagle's breast and leg feathers. Really sharp strikes occur only on occasion.

A hint of gold toning shows on both sides, perhaps a bit deeper at the borders. A sparkling Gem example of the finest order for the grade. The luster is unbeatable, smooth and satin-like, the strike is nearly full, with splendid detail, being quite crisp in most places including Liberty's split thumb and the hair under the cap. A conditionally scarce example of this revised type with the mintmark moved from its prominent obverse placement to a more obscure location near the reverse rim. Pop 49; 10 finer, 8 in 66, 2 in 66+. (PCGS # 6573) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1929-S. NGC graded MS-65. The gripping frosty-white luster complements surfaces that show slight accents of tan, deepening on the reverse to lilac near the rims. Both the bold strike and the rich mint luster separate this Gem from typical examples of this Depression-era issue. Pop 133; 37 finer. Special NGC label "The Renaissance Era".

Lot 1478
1940-S. PCGS graded MS-66+. CAC Approved. Lovely blue and lilac toning over the obverse, the reverse is brilliant. The satin-like luster is almost unimpaired by abrasions of any size on this pristine specimen from the San Francisco mint. The strike is crisp in most areas, as well, though some lack of detail may be noted at Liberty's hand and on the eagle's leg, both being centered at the highpoints of the design where the results of striking often fail to show completely. Very scarce in this high grade. Pop 36; 11 finer, 9 in 67, 2 in 67+ (PCGS # 6610) .
