Lot 1448
1893. PCGS graded Proof 68 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. A relatively small mintage of 792 proof Barber half dollars was completed in 1893, the second year of the design. Walter Breen, Encyclopedia of U.S. Proof Coinage, opines that this date is somewhat scarcer than the 1892, but less popular with collectors because of the first-year-of-issue effect. Examples in Proof 68 condition are virtually unknown, and this specimen is the single finest certified in the Cameo designation by PCGS.

The present coin is a stunning Cameo example, with spectacular blue-green, gold, deep red, and violet patina over both sides that deepens toward the border areas. The pristine surfaces are brightly reflective under the toning, and the field-device contrast is profound, especially as the coin turns under a light. The strike is razor-sharp in most areas, but typical softness appears at the juncture of the shield and eagle's wing. An important opportunity for the Barber half dollar specialist. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 86540) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 27,000.

Lot 1449
1895. PCGS graded Proof 68 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely turquoise-blue, sky-blue, crimson, and golden toning is mixed with other colors of the rainbow. This is a stunning Proof striking, and it is a coin that has been preserved in essentially "as struck" condition since the year it was purchased from the Mint. There are no hairlines on either side and the fields are deep and unfathomably mirrored with pleasing mint frost over the devices, which yields a partial cameo contrast. An important and visually magnificent coin. Only 880 proofs were issued in 1895. Pop 2; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6542) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1450
1895. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC Approved. Soft golden-russet colors decorate the borders and encircle the essentially untoned centers of this fully struck and well preserved example. Only 880 proofs were coined, and high grade Cameo examples are too few in number to satisfy the collectors of this popular series. Pop 10; 8 finer (PCGS # 86542) .
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,400.

Lot 1451
1895-S. PCGS graded MS-66. A semi key-date issue among Barber halves, the 1895-S has a not overly generous original mintage of just 1.1 million pieces. As with most deliveries of this type, the '95-S is typically offered well worn, and Mint State examples, when offered at all, are seldom in the Gem category, let alone an MS-66. This softly frosted condition rarity displays modest, yet appreciable cartwheel visual effects as the surfaces rotate under a light. Some rich reddish-golden and lilac tinting is seen, and even the most casual glance will reveal sharp striking definition over all elements of the design. There are a couple of tiny abrasions on the obverse, but these are not out of context for a Barber half dollar at the MS-66 grade level. Pop 4; 2 finer in 67. (PCGS # 6473) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

1898. NGC graded MS-64. Frosty and lustrous, the mottled reddish-gold surfaces exhibit sea-green highlights at the border areas. Sharply struck throughout. A small indentation and a couple of tiny marks are noted on the portrait's cheek. Pop 29; 20 finer, 3 in 64+, 15 in 65, 2 in 66.

Lot 1453
1900. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. A cameo finish is highly desirable in a proof Barber half dollar of any date, and this popular turn-of-the-century specimen also offers extremely smooth, essentially perfect surfaces that are solidly graded as Superb. It also possesses a marked contrast between the fields and devices as if it had recently been struck at Philadelphia. Fully defined overall, one wonders how it has remained virtually untouched and undamaged for 115 years. This one should sell for a record bid. Pop 3; none finer at NGC. Tied for the finest graded at both services.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1455
1903. PCGS graded MS-65. The 1903 is a highly underrated Barber half date and is much rarer in high grades than one might expect for a P-mint issue with a respectable mintage of 2.2 million pieces. This frosty Gem is mostly brilliant with just a hint of natural patina over each side. Smooth, lustrous, and sharply struck, we can find no fault with this coin in the context of the MS-65 designation from PCGS. Worthy of a close examination and a strong bid.Pop 6; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 5 in 66. (PCGS # 6495) .

1903-O. NGC graded MS-65. A beautifully toned Gem, both sides have rich sunset-gold at the center that gradually changes to russet, blue, and sea-green near the borders. Faint hairlines are noted in the obverse fields and a couple of minor marks appear on both sides. Exceptional quality for this New Orleans issue. Pop 9; 4 finer in 66.

Lot 1458
1907-D. PCGS graded MS-65. Far finer than the typically offered 1907-D Barber half, this frosty Gem is sharply struck and free of detracting abrasions. Also attractively toned, we note iridescent reddish-russet and powder-blue iridescence intermixed on each side. Well defined and essentially mark-free. Pop 24; 16 finer (PCGS # 6509) .

Lot 1459
1909. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. This well preserved and carefully struck example features deep russet-brown and purple toning toward the margins, while the centers remain largely brilliant. The 1909 Philadelphia issue is the most available Barber half dollar for that year with a mintage of nearly 2.4 million coins. Few were saved over the years as nice as this one; examples are scarce in Gem condition and rare in this lofty grade. Pop 11; 3 finer in 66+ (PCGS # 6516) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,000.

Lot 1460
1911. PCGS graded Proof 65 PQ. CAC Approved. Deep iridescent toning favors red and gold but multicolored accents including blue-green are in the mix over each side. This is rare to find with such lovely rainbow hues. Pleasant satin luster envelops all devices under its frosted radiance, with the exquisite toning and sleek mirrors radiate throughout. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was fully brought up by the special proof dies. One of a minuscule mintage of just 543 pieces. Pop 33; 26 finer (PCGS # 6558) .

Lot 1462
1915. PCGS graded Proof 66 PQ. CAC Approved. The year 1915 marked the final issue of the Barber half dollar. Only 450 proofs were minted in this last year of the denomination. High grade survivors such as this coin are rare today and few can match the appeal of the coin offered in this lot. Both sides display an intricate mingling of lilac and honey-golden and brown hues at the peripheries, with brilliant white dominating the central devices. A near-perfect strike adds to this coin's fantastic eye appeal. Pop 13; 9 finer in 67 (PCGS # 6562) .
